What To Do When Someone Is Choking

The Heimlich Maneuver For ages 13 months
and up
  • First ask the person if they are choking and if
    you can help them
  • Next if the person agrees position yourself
    behind them with your head turned to the side
  • Wrap your arms around the choking persons waist
  • Have one hand positioned in a fist with the other
    hand covering it, approximately two inches above
    the chokers belly button
  • Finally, do five hard thrusts inward and upward
  • Continue for a minute or until the choker
    recovers or becomes unconscious
  • Call 911 if choker becomes unconscious

What To Do When Infants Choke
  • Hold the infant facing downwards
  • Be sure to support the infants head
  • Hit between the infants shoulder blades up to
    five times
  • Check the infants mouth
  • Repeat process if needed
  • Call 911 if child becomes unconscious

How People React When Choking
  • Children will often times seek out help when
    choking
  • Many times adults do not want to believe it is a
    life threatening situation or do not like the
    attention and will run away from you or try to
    fight you from helping them

What To Do When The Choker Resists Your Help
  • Offer your help again
  • Wait for the choker to become unconscious
  • Call 911
  • Begin CPR
