4Mission
- Ensure that carriers that want to roam, can roam
- Develop implementation guidelines to enable
roaming for new services and capabilities which
will result in additional revenue for carriers - Work on projects which will
- Enhance roaming experience for subscribers
- Reduce operating cost of roaming service for
carriers - Reduce time-to-market for carriers to initiate
roaming service
5CDG Roaming Efforts
- International Roaming Team (IRT)
- Roaming Project New
- Launched in March 2005
6Relationship Among CDG Roaming Efforts
- CDG Roaming Project vs. IRT
- Efforts are complementary
- IRT works on issues of interest to active
participants - Mostly advanced operators
- Examples are packet data roaming, direct routing
roamer-to-roamer (DRRR) - CDG-RP works on basic issues of training,
tools, documentation, testing, carrier processes,
industry metrics, etc. - IRT will review and approve roaming project
deliverables
7IRT Meeting Participants March 2005
Based on CDG roaming team attendance March 2 3
in Beijing
8IRT Status of Priorities
Note New prioritization underway now. Will be
finalized during June IRT meeting
9CDMA Roaming eXchange (CRX) Status
- Project to define a CDMA Roaming eXchange
launched June 04 - Analogous to GPRS Roaming eXchange (GRX) for GSM
carriers - Addresses traffic, signaling, and billing
- Provides inter-carrier connection for 1x DO
packet data roaming - Peering to ensure availability of choice and
competition among CRX providers - CRX Spec (ref doc 94) approved December, 2004
- CDG Executive Board endorsed CRX
- Carriers are now signing agreements with CRX
providers - Syniverse
- Verisign
- Aicent
- Peering tests underway
10Upcoming IRT Meetings
- June 23 24 Boca Raton, Florida
- Co-locate with Syniverse Solutions event
- Hosted by Syniverse
- September 2005 India
- Dates are TBD
- December 2005 Location TBD
- Typically co-located with 3GPP2 in Hawaii
11CDG Roaming Dedicated Support Team
- Provide CDG members with dedicated resources and
project structure that will provide the
following - Substantial improvement in CDMA international
roaming - Quality
- Quantity
- Carrier support
- Stimulate much stronger involvement and
commitment to roaming by carriers - Create technical information repository, bulletin
board, contact lists - Facilitate inter-carrier meetings, field testing
- Establish and track industry-wide roaming goals
and metrics - Specialized training
- Documentation
- Service definition, test procedures,
troubleshooting processes, recommended minimum
requirements for handsets and infrastructure

33CRX Providers
- CDMA Packet Data Roaming eXchange (CRX) Providers
are in the business of facilitating CDMA data
roaming for operators - Similar function to GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX)
providers - Allows an operator to only create a single data
connection with the CRX provider and implement
roaming with multiple operators - CRX providers typically perform financial
settlement between operators - CRX providers are required to interconnect, so
operators service by different CRX providers
should still be able to implement roaming
34Functions of a CRX provider
- Provides a secure backbone for operator
interconnection - Provides a proxy AAA so operators always send AAA
transactions to same place - Interfaces with operator billing system to
perform settlement function
