• Form in layers or cloud decks
• Formed by slow ascent of air
• Cumuloform Clouds
• Develop vertically to heights up to 40,000 feet
• Formed by rapid ascent of air

• STRATIFORM CLOUDS are classified based on their
  altitude
• HIGH CLOUDS
• Form above 20,000 feet (6000 meters)
• Temperatures are very cold at such high
  elevations
• Composed of ice crystals.
• CIRRUS, cirrostratus, cirrocumulus
• MID-LEVEL CLOUDS
• Form at 6500 - 20,000 feet (2000 - 6000 meters)
• Usually composed of water droplets.
• altostratus, altocumulus
• LOW-LEVEL CLOUDS
• Form below 6500 feet (below 2000 meters)
• Usually composed of water droplets.
• stratus, stratocumulus, nimbostatus, fog
