2LOCATION
Ashokan Field Campus is an outdoor/environmental
education center, owned and operated by Campus
Auxiliary Services of the State University of New
York, New Paltz. It is located in the foothills
of the Catskill Mountains, ten miles west of
Kingston, in upstate New York.
3MISSION STATEMENT Outdoor education is teaching
and learning through first hand experiences
outside the traditional classroom. The academic
aspects of our program are interdisciplinary.
The activities center strongly on natural and
cultural history and adventure education. The
pervasive theme is environmental awareness and
healthy living. It is our mission to provide
exemplary outdoor/environmental opportunities
toward the goals of enlightenment, environmental
awareness and responsible stewardship.

Field Campus.

Can YOU make a fire without matches in order to
survive in the wilderness?
BROOMMAKING
Students work step-by-step to complete each
project.
TINSMITHING
Safety first!
BLACKSMITHING
Instructors help students in the craft of
blacksmithing to make a lasting souvenir.
10GORGE HIKE
The Gorge Hike is a moderately easy and
educational trail with spectacular views!
11MAPLE SUGARING (dependent on the weather)
Students participate in the process and taste
pure maple syrup in the form of candy made in
the snow.

The Birdman visits!
14CLOTHING AND SUPPLY LIST
- Sleeping bag
- One pillow case
- Two bath towels, wash cloth, soap
- Pajamas/sweat suit for sleeping
- Underwear (2-4)
- Thermal underwear or tights and long sleeve
shirts - 2 sweaters or sweat shirts
- Long pants (2-3)
- Long sleeve shirts (2-3)
- 2 woolen hats and 2 pair of waterproof mittens or
gloves - Warm scarf
- Shoes for indoor use only
- Waterproof boots
- Warm jacket/coat
- Woolen socks (6 pair)
- Waterproof poncho
- Laundry bag (plastic will do)
- Snow pants/ski pants
- Optional camera, books
15CLOTHING AND OTHER SUPPLIES
- Label everything!
- Students must come dressed with snow pants, snow
boots, hat and gloves. Students must wear these
items at all times. DO NOT PACK THEM! - No food,drinks or snacks of any kind! They feed
us well! - No electronic equipment of any kind is allowed.
- Disposable or inexpensive cameras only.

- Students are ALWAYS supervised.
- There is a nurse on-site 24-hours a day.
- This program directly addresses the New York
State Standards and our fifth grade science
curriculum. - Parents may check the Website for a daily report.
- Students DO NOT have access to a phone.
- We are experienced in dealing with homesickness!
