  • We are pleased to inform you that you
    have been accepted to the BATS BACC Counselor
    training program.

Here is a list of all necessary books and
equipment needed to conduct BACC appointments
with your students.

What is BACC ?
  • A supplemental undergraduate advisory program
  • MA students provide individualized academic and
    career counseling to undergraduate psychology
    students
  • Utilizes performance contracting to help
    students achieve their goals

Mission Statement
  • The purpose of BACC is to provide quality
    counseling services to undergraduate college
    students attending Western Michigan University so
    they have the knowledge needed to achieve their
    academic and professional goals. In turn, society
    will benefit from the services that these
    students can provide.

Recruiting students
  • How do you get your students to attend?
  • Though wed like to believe students attend a
    BACC appointment for their own benefits

  • The truth is in the contingencies
  • Students earn 20 participation points for showing
    up
  • Additionally
  • Students will lose 20 participation points if
    they fail to show for a scheduled appointment
  • And 10 OAPs for scheduling and keeping follow-up
    appointments
  • Students earn 10 OAPs for every completed
    Performance Contract
  • Or lose 20 OAPs for a no-show

The Interview
  • Once the student sets up an appointment
  • Remind them to complete their How to Achieve
    Your Goals form

  • Decide on the appropriate course of the interview
    for the student

With Freshmen/Sophomores
  • Discuss appropriate classes, pratica, or research
    needed to achieve the students goals
  • Give a brief overview of what is involved in
    applying to grad school
  • Include common requirements for their chosen area
  • IEClinical programs are VERY competitive

With Juniors/Seniors
  • Discuss any last minute courses needed to
    graduate
  • Give a detailed time-line of applying to grad
    school
  • Cover the GRE (push our GRE course)
  • Discuss sources of Letters of Recommendation
  • Discuss personal statement
  • Give sites for searching various programs

With all students
  • Try to set up a Performance Contract
  • This is KEY in helping students achieve their
    goals
  • Ideas for contracts include
  • Research 5 grad schools you might like
  • Look up all practica and choose one
  • Go and get your degree audit by X date

BE CREATIVE!!!

Career Counseling
  • Explain the options with a terminal BA/BS
  • Remind them that they can get a job in behavior
    analysis at this level
  • Discuss classes that will help them obtain their
    desired position
  • Discuss advantages of moving for a job
  • Point them to
  • The Job Binder (in the BATS Lab)

  • ABA or APA job sites

After The Interview
  • Offer the student a follow-up appointment
  • Follow up on Performance Contracts
  • Apply and Remove OAPs as needed
  • Turn in the HTAYG form to the BACC Junior
    Systems Manager.
  • Have student fill out a FeedBACC form

Helpful hints
  • Keep it informal
  • Use personal anecdotes
  • Know classes specific professors teach
  • Familiarize yourself with Westerns campus and
    policies
  • Ask if they have any specific questions
  • They can make as many follow-up appts. as they
    want for 10 OAPs each
  • They can fill out as many performance contracts
    as they want for 10 OAPs each

  • They enable you to know your students better!
