Graduation Board Overview
  • The Graduation Board is a structured interview
which is designed to examine your readiness to
    start your first headship.
  • Within the framework of the six key areas of the
    National Standards for Headteachers your
readiness will be assessed against three key
    aspects of effective headship
  • Your capacity as a continuing professional
learner - shown particularly through your use of
the learning opportunities available to you
    during the NPQH development stage
  • Your ability to perform the actions and achieve
the outcomes needed to lead and manage a school
established by the evidence of your own existing
achievements as a school leader described in the
documents sent in advance to your board members
and your response to the questions posed in the
    interview
  • Your credibility as a potential headteacher as
seen in the capabilities and characteristics you
demonstrate during the interview and/or as
reported by others in the advance documentation.

3
Graduation Board Overview
  • Your interview will be between 60 75 minutes
with three Board Members and will typically be
held at a venue within your region
  • There will be 4 graduation windows available
within your 12 month development journey
  • The evidence to be confirmed and validated by the
Graduation Board will be in two forms
  • documentary (in the form of documents provided in
    advance)
  • oral (in the form of dialogue between yourself
and the three board members at the interview)
  • All Board Members will be trained and accredited
    through NCSL

4
Your Graduation Supporting Documentation
  • A minimum of 3 weeks prior to your interview you
will need to electronically submit your
    graduation portfolio
  • A brief profile of your leadership career in the
    last eight years.
  • A Personal Learning Record (PLR) which is a three
page max distillation of the nature and impact of
    your development priorities completed in
    preparation for headship.
  • A statement from your headteacher/line manager.
  • A statement from the headteacher of your
    placement school.
  • A copy of your Decision and Feedback form,
summarising your strengths and areas for
development, which you completed at the end of
your two-day assessment development event. This
document is handwritten and will need to be faxed
or scanned to the NPQH Graduation Centre.
  • Your portfolio will also include a feedback
report from your second 360o diagnostic review.
  • Electronic templates of documents 1 - 4 can be
found at in the NPQH Development Stage area of
    the learning gateway
  • Please note that late submission of your
    portfolio may jeopardise your Graduation
opportunity within your preferred window and
result in you incurring a cancellation fee

5
Your Graduation Supporting Documentation
  • It is important that your documents as a whole
demonstrate as explicitly as possible the level
of your capability in each of the six key areas
    of the National Standards
  • and
  • the progress you have made in building on your
strengths and addressing your development needs
    in each of these areas
  • Whilst there is no expectation that a starting
headteacher will be equally knowledgeable and
competent in every key area it is central to the
award of NPQH that prospective headteachers can
demonstrate that they are as committed to their
own professional learning as they must be to the
provision of learning opportunities of the
highest possible quality for all the
    pupils/students in their school
