3Impressionism, a major movement in painting that
developed chiefly in France during the late 19th
and early 20th centuries. Impressionist painting
comprises the work produced between about 1867
and 1886 by a group of artists who shared a set
of related approaches and techniques.
Characteristics of Impressionism were an attempt
to accurately and objectively record visual
reality in terms of transient effects of light
and color.
4Quotation Monet, 1889- "When you go out to paint,
try to forget what objects you have before you --
a tree, a house, a field, or whatever. Merely
think, here is a little square of blue, here an
oblong pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint
it just as it looks to you, the exact color and
shape, until it gives you your own naive
impression of the scene before you."

6Transient effects of light and colour
- Often made using short dabs of colour, one over
another. - This technique makes Impressionist pictures
shimmer and live.

- This is one of my favourite paintings from the
Impressionist Movement. It is by Georges Seurat
and it is titled "Le Bec du Horne, Grandcamp". It
is an excellent example of the pointillist (DOTS)
technique. Le Bec du Hoc was a spectacular
geological feature which was greatly reduced by
bombardment during the Second World War. This
painting can be admired at the National Gallery
in London.
