EARLY AMERICAN LITERATURE16201820
2
John Smith, who established Jamestown in
1607,was most likely responsible, more than any
other individual, for convincing
3
English readers that an earthly paradise lay
across the Atlantic, especially in regard to
natural and material wealth. He also mapped the
Atlantic coast, with which the Pilgrims were
familiar.
4
THE PURITAN EXPERIMENT PLYMOUTH PLANTATION
  • The Puritans were not indifferent to material
    success. However, they

5
had more in mind than mere financial success. On
the Mayflower about 27 of the 100 people aboard
were Puritans.
6
This handful of individuals considered themselves
reborn Christians, and the NEW chosen people.
7
These Pilgrims have heavily influenced Protestant
fundamentalism. Their religious ideas are still
with us today, especially in the South.
8
The Puritans had a firm belief in the concept of
spiritual warfare, an idea still deeply rooted
in American culture.
9
The Puritans thought of themselves as spiritual
warriors in a great battle against the
arch-fiendSatan.
10
One could use the metaphor that they walked
around with Satan riding on their back constantly.
11
They emphatically believed Satans purpose was to
destroy the Kingdom of God on earth by sowing
discord among individuals who called themselves
Christians.
12
They came to America toestablish their own
freedom of religion.
