2John Smith, who established Jamestown in
1607,was most likely responsible, more than any
other individual, for convincing
3English readers that an earthly paradise lay
across the Atlantic, especially in regard to
natural and material wealth. He also mapped the
Atlantic coast, with which the Pilgrims were
familiar.
4THE PURITAN EXPERIMENT PLYMOUTH PLANTATION
- The Puritans were not indifferent to material
success. However, they
5had more in mind than mere financial success. On
the Mayflower about 27 of the 100 people aboard
were Puritans.
6This handful of individuals considered themselves
reborn Christians, and the NEW chosen people.
7These Pilgrims have heavily influenced Protestant
fundamentalism. Their religious ideas are still
with us today, especially in the South.
8The Puritans had a firm belief in the concept of
spiritual warfare, an idea still deeply rooted
in American culture.
9The Puritans thought of themselves as spiritual
warriors in a great battle against the
arch-fiendSatan.
10One could use the metaphor that they walked
around with Satan riding on their back constantly.
11They emphatically believed Satans purpose was to
destroy the Kingdom of God on earth by sowing
discord among individuals who called themselves
Christians.
12They came to America toestablish their own
freedom of religion.
