Title: Jesus and Tradition 15:111

1
Jesus and Tradition 151-11
  • Pharisees challenge Jesus on a hand washing
    tradition.
  • Jesus puts their tradition in perspective.
  • He says they transgress Gods law to keep their
    tradition.
  • In particular they dishonor parents by
    withholding their support for religious
    reasons.
  • He accuses them of the sin of Isaiahs day
teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.
  • Jesus teaches about real purification.
  • Its not about what goes in your mouth.
  • Its about what you say.

2
More from Jesus on Tradition 1512-20
  • He answers disciples about offending Pharisees.
  • The Father will uproot them.
  • They are the blind leading the blind - both will
    fall into a pit.
  • He answers Peter with more explanation.
  • What goes in the mouth (food) passes through the
    digestive system (stomach).
  • What comes out of the mouth comes from the heart
    (all kinds of evil thinking).
  • Murder sex outside marriage
  • Theft lies
  • Its what comes out of the mouth that defiles.

3
Jesus heals a Gentile woman. 1521-28
  • A Canaanite from around Tyre Sidon asks for a
    miracle.
  • She wants him to heal her demon-possessed
    daughter.
  • His disciples want to send her away.
  • Jesus explains his primary mission to Israelites.
  • She keeps begging.
  • He compares taking away the childrens food for
    dogs.
  • She asks for crumbs from the table.
  • He heals her daughter because of her great faith.

4
Jesus repeatedly does miracles. 1529-39
  • He heals great crowds, and they glorify God.
  • He feeds a crowd of 4000.
  • He responds in compassion to the crowd because
they have been around 3 days without eating.
  • The disciples question how they are supposed to
feed such a crowd in such a deserted place.
  • He feeds them with seven loaves and a few fish.
  • 4000 (families) are fed and seven baskets are
    left over.
  • This is the second of two miraculous feedings.

5
Leaven of Pharisees Sadducees 161-12
  • Jesus rejects evil sign-seeking. 1-5
  • The Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign from heaven.
  • He says they just dont see the signs of the
    times.
  • He says their sign-seeking is the product of an
    evil and adulterous generation.
  • Jesus warns against leaven of Pharisees and
    Sadducees. 6-12
  • The disciples mistake his figure of speech for a
    literal statement.
  • Jesus concludes from their comments that the
feedings of thousands has not produced much faith
    in them.
  • Then they understand that he is talking about the
teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

6
Peters Great Confession 1613-19
  • They go to Caesarea Philippi.
  • Jesus asks who people say he is.
  • Some say John the Baptist.
  • Some say Elijah, Jeremiah, or some other prophet.
  • Jesus asks who they say he is.
  • Simon (Peter) answers.
  • You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.
  • Jesus says Simon is blessed because he has
learned this from the Father himself, not human
    reasoning.
  • Jesus calls him Peter (rock).
  • Jesus says he will build his church on this rock
    - the confession that Peter makes.
  • This church will survive death (Hades).
  • This church will submit to heaven-given apostolic
    rule.

7
The Dangers Ahead for Jesus 1620-23
  • Jesus warns disciples against revealing that he
    is the Son of God.
  • He explains what will soon happen in Jerusalem.
  • He explains that Jewish leaders will have him
    killed.
  • He explains that God will raise him on the third
    day.
  • Peter rebukes Jesus.
  • He says, Never!
  • He says, Thats not going to happen!
  • Jesus rebukes Peter.
  • He calls this Satans work in Peter, and rebukes
    Satan.
  • He says Peter is looking at this from a human
    view.
  • He teaches Peter to look at it from Gods view.

8
The Cost of Discipleship 1624-28
  • Following Jesus has its price.
  • You must deny yourself.
  • You must take up your cross.
  • You must lose your life.
  • Following Jesus is worth the price.
  • What profit is in saving your life if you lose
    your soul?
  • What will you give in exchange for your soul?
  • In the end Jesus will repay everyone for their
    deeds.
  • Jesus is just about to take his place in the
kingdom - within the lifetime of the disciples.
