Title: Using the Patchwork Text as a teaching, learning and assessment strategy to promote Interprofessiona

1
Using the Patchwork Text as a teaching, learning
and assessment strategy to promote
Interprofessional collaboration.
  • Jayne Crow
  • Shirley Jones
  • Lesley Smith

2
What is the Patchwork text?
  • (Winter 1999)
  • Students write a series of short patches using
a variety of writing styles during the course of
    the module
  • Students share their writing in learning sets
  • Students encouraged to edit their work in the
    light of their discussions
  • The final patch is a synthesis of their learning
through out the module stitching together
    their previous patches

3
Why use the Patchwork Text?
  • Educationally sound
  • Paces learning
  • Variety of styles
  • Peer feedback
  • Resonance for collaboration - because the PT
    process involves collaborative learning we
thought it would integrate teaching learning and
    assessment.

4
Practical Aspects of the Patchwork Text Approach
  • Preparation
  • What are the desired learning outcomes (LOs)?
  • Identify content/ stimulus material - written,
    experience, presentation, etc
  • Design and sequencing of patches to meet the LOs
  • number, length, frequency, genre, nature of
    synthesis

5
Practical Aspects of the Patchwork Text Approach
  • Managing the process.
  • Setting up and supporting the learning sets
  • Providing organisational guidance- written and
    verbal
  • Providing academic guidance- written and verbal
  • Ensure clarity about Student responsibilities
  • Role of the tutor
  • Deliver the content/stimulus
  • Managing the assessment

6
Themes from the data
  • Changing attitudes and perceptions and promoting
    reflexivity in students
  • The writing of the patches has influenced my
self-awareness positively and to a great extent
because it has allowed for reflection.
  • It means that I have the views of others and
their opinions make me further analyse my ideas
    and so be more self-aware

7
Themes from the data
  • Understanding of the barriers facilitators of
    interprofessional collaboration
  • The sharing engenderedMuch more empathy and
understanding to colleagues within my own
discipline and those from other agencies
  • I am aware that we have different training and
experiences and it has been very valuable in as
far as sensitising myself to these differences.
I feel I appreciate better the role the health
workers play and have gained an understanding
    from hearing/reading their perspectives.

8
Themes from the data
  • Learning to collaborate in practice
  • Actually although you do learn the theory (on
traditionally assessed courses), what you never
do is to take it away and really think about how
its affecting the way that you work. And thats
what this has made you do. More than anything I
suppose, the major learning outcome for me has
been This is how I am at work and this is the
reason Im like this and this is how I can change
and perhaps work more collaboratively, more
    effectively with other professional groups.

9
Themes from the data
  • Learning to collaborate in practice
  • By bringing the social work knowledge into
that, its completely opened it up for me because
I think, you get very insular in your own
profession and quite biased as well towards other
professional groups sometimes. Unless you almost
bring that right back to basics and revisit it,
almost to the point that you came into your
professional training, strip it all away and
examine it and perhaps start again, youve got no
hope of changing. That (the patchwork text) has
    really done that for me.

10
Learning for the students Similarities between
features our Patchwork Text process and the
facilitators of interprofessional collaboration
  • Sharing information and experiences
  • Reciprocity and trust
  • Role clarity
  • Commitment
  • Self awareness
  • Awareness of discourse/language
  • All the voices and perspectives are heard
  • Effective communication

11
Concluding thoughts
  • Patchwork text offers potential for developing
    interprofessional education
  • Extending its use to different groups masters
    level
  • Increasing creativity and variety of patches
  • Crow, J. Smith, L. Jones, S. (2005) Using the
Patchwork text as a vehicle for promoting
    interprofessional health and social care
collaboration in Higher Education. Learning in
    Health and Social Care. 4.3.117-128.
