Title: INTRODUCTION TO

1
  • INTRODUCTION TO

KRSNA CALCULUS!
2
WELCOME TO KRSNA CALCULUS!
  • Hare Krishna!
  • First and foremost I welcome you to Krsna
    Calculus.
  • My name is Krsna Dhenu Thakar. I am the
instructor for this course. I am currently a
pre-pharmacy major here at the State University
    of New York at Buffalo.
  • I have tutored calculus for almost two and half
years. In addition, I have tutored and held small
sessions for other mathematical classes for
    nearly four years.

3
WHAT IS KRSNA CALCULUS?
  • Krsna Calculus is calculus used in a Krsna
    Conscious perspective.
  • These slide shows are meant for any student who
is currently taking AP Calculus AB or BC, College
Calculus I or Calculus II (Calculus III is still
    being considered).
  • Unlike high school and college math classes, this
Krsna Calculus presentation will in its best
attempt to glorify Sri Sri Radha Krsna in a
variety of ways with the use of various problems
in which you can use math, especially something
advanced as calculus, to serve Krsna. To further
prove the point, anything can be used for Krsnas
    service.
  • Regardless of religion or Vedic references, all
mathematical information is to be considered
    valid.

4
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
  • Faith Have faith in yourself! You can never feel
the urge or that power to tackle a good problem
without knowing that you CAN do it!
  • Good amount of time I studied calculus for 20
days and I took the AP and got a 5. Was it easy?
No! So, I recommend that you study these slides
while your teacher in school discuss these
topics. Calculus will get very difficult when you
procrastinate! And dont try cramming either!
  • A Graphing Calculator To be honest, some
teachers will enforce graphing calculators. The
AP exam says you must bring a graphing
calculator. Some professors do not even believe
in graphing calculators. As a calculus tutor, I
would like you to have a graphing calculator.
    (TI-86 most preferably).
  • If you are a student not formally taking
calculus, you do not really need a graphing
calculator. However, graphing calculator will be
a powerful tool to understand graphs,
trajectories, concepts, and many more ideas
    developed in this course.

5
PREREQUISITE
  • I hate to say this but calculus is the only math
that involves algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
together. If you dont have these skills, I
recommend that you brush up on that before you
    take this course.
  • A pre-calculus class is very much needed.
Pre-calculus will make you remember all the
algebra, geometry, and trigonometry you have
learned through the years, and will add new
concepts and new techniques on how to solve
problems. After proficiency in pre-calculus, you
    can take calculus.

6
SOME DOS AND DO NOTS!
  • DO Homework assignments! As writing will be an
integral (laugh!) portion of this course,
practicing to write math will be of great use. Do
homework assignments and try challenging ones to
challenge your intelligence. Going over, reading,
and writing will reinforce concepts which will
allow you to remember these things more fluently.
  • DO NOT Put off studying and looking at these
slides the night before the exam. You have so
much to worry about already! There is too much
material to cram in short-term memory. In
addition, that material will be used in future
chapters. Just because you aced an exam in short
term memory doesnt mean you can forget
everything. You will need it at some point or
    another.
  • DO NOT Forget to chant Hare Krishna before the
exam. And do not forget these problems! Perhaps
you can make a calculus test a rather bona fide
    experience! -)

7
YOU SHOULD KNOW
  • You are expected to know the following before
taking this course! If you are unfamiliar with
three or more concepts, review them until you
have great hold on the concepts! You cannot do
    this course without these concepts!
  • How to solve equations algebraically
  • Elements of graphs (zero, extrema, end behavior,
    limits)
  • Geometry concepts
  • Graphs of linear, quadratic, exponential,
    logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse, and
    polynomial functions.
  • Deriving inverses of functions
  • Manipulation of functions
  • Modeling real life problems
  • Complex numbers
  • The number e (natural base) and ln (natural
    logarithm)
  • Trig functions and their uses

8
SLIDE SHOWS PURPOSE
  • Please keep in mind that these slide shows are
meant to reviewing and reinforcing the topics
that usually covered in a typical college/AP
    calculus course.
  • Do not mistaken these slides as an alternative
textbook. Textbooks are more powerful, as they
have more problems in the book, and more
explanations than a PowerPoint slide show.

9
ADDITIONAL HELP
  • As calculus tutoring has become my passion ever
since I studied it in 2001, I am personally able
to help any student in their calculus work, or
elaborate any unclear areas in the slide show.
  • Each slideshow in the presentation has a help
information page which contains my e-mail
address and a reference to the help statement.
  • The next slide is my official help statement to
all viewers of Krsna Calculus slide show.

10
HELP STATEMENT
  • Just as much as I love to volunteer in helping
students understand calculus, I do request few
things before you send me e-mail.
  • I am here to help you, not to do your homework at
    the last moment.
  • If you do send me a homework problem, please give
me some indication on how you started the
    problem.
  • This allows me to see if you tried it. As well,
it can allow me to pick up habitual mistakes in
    math more easily.
  • I do try to check e-mail on a timely fashion.
However, please anticipate some delay in
response. I am a very busy person, and I have so
much to do with school, work, and projects.
  • If you must, for any reason, make an appointment
with me, please e-mail me at least few days in
advance, and we can try working something out.

11
END OF INTRODUCTION
  • Calculus can be hard, overwhelming, but not
    impossible!
  • Just follow the steps I presented for this
course, and I assure you will do well.
  • Good luck for this course! Hare Krishna!
