Title: Ignatian Prayer
1(No Transcript)
2Ignatian Prayer
3Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) was the founder of
the Society of Jesus and the author of The
Spiritual Exercises.
4The prayers of self-examination that he
introduced are central to Jesuit spirituality and
the 28-day Ignatian retreat outlined in the
Exercises.
5The following is a form of daily Ignatian prayer
as pioneered by the Jesuit Communication Centre
in Dublin, Ireland.
6The Presence of God
As I sit here, the beating of my heart, the ebb
and flow of my breathing, the movements of my
mind are all signs of Gods ongoing creation of
me. I pause for a moment, and become aware of
this presence of God within me.
7Freedom
If God were trying to tell me something, would I
know? If God were reassuring me or challenging
me, would I notice? I ask for the grace to be
free of my own preoccupations and open to what
God may be saying to me.
8Consciousness
I exist in a web of relationships -- links to
nature, people, God. I trace out these links,
giving thanks for the life that flows through
them. Some links are twisted or broken I may
feel regret, anger, and disappointment. I pray
for the gift of acceptance and forgiveness.
9I take my time to read the Word of God, slowly, a
few times, allowing myself to dwell on anything
that strikes me.
Word
Jesus said to the apostles, Peace I leave with
you my peace I give to you. I do not give to
you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts
be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You
heard me say to you, I am going away, and I am
coming back to you. If you loved me, you would
rejoice that I am going to the Father, because
the Father is greater than I. And now I have
told you this before it occurs, so that when it
does occur, you may believe. John 1427-29
10Conversation
What is stirring in me as I pray? Am I consoled,
troubled, left cold? I imagine Jesus himself
standing or sitting at my side, and share my
feelings with him.
11Conclusion
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to
the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is
now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
