    planets

3
Development ofNatural Rights
  • John Locke was the most often followed/cited
  • Individuals and society could be changed
  • How?
  • Through education and rational thought

4
More importantly
  • People could change government through the
    decisions of the majority
  • That is Locke argued that it wasnt Gods will
that monarchs rule-which was called absolutism

5
Cotton Mather
  • Perhaps the most important contribution this
gentleman made was the smallpox inoculation

6
Ben Franklin
  • Deist One who believes that God created the
universe and left it to be run according to
    natural rights
  • Most of Franklin's beliefs can be found in Poor
    Richards Almanac

7
Pietism and the Great AwakeningA reawakening of
religious beliefs
  • The most often followed/cited individual that
followed these beliefs was Jonathan Edwards
  • He preached that men and women were helpless,
that they were completely dependent on God
  • Tis only the power and mere pleasure of God that
    holds you up

8
Colonial followers
  • Old Lights
  • Condemned the more radical Pietism believers-the
    new lights
  • These were ones that cried out, fainted, and
    convulsed at meetings
  • Thus, just as the Protestant Reformation saw a
separation of the church in Europe, the Great
Awakening saw a separation of the church in the
    colonies
