European Explorers
  • The Impact of contact between First Nations
    Peoples and Explorers

2
Contact Between First Nations Peoples and
Explorers
  • The exploration of Canada had both a positive and
a negative impact on the First Nation peoples and
    Europeans alike.
  • Since there are no written records from the First
Nations population, what we know about how they
thought and felt about the Europeans and of the
changes in the Europeans brought are from oral
stories passed down from generation to
    generation.
  • Written records of the explorers do give some
indications as to how the First Nations peoples
    were impacted

The introduction of guns enabled the Aboriginals
to hunt more successfully

New Animals were introduced by Europeans
  • One of the most important animals was the horse,
which allowed the First Nations peoples to travel
faster and greater distances. Later, other
animals such as chickens, cows, sheep, and pigs
    were introduced

Grains such as wheat and barley were brought over
from Europe
  • Some First Nation Peoples used these for crops

They traded furs for goods that made their lives
easier
12
NEGATIVE IMPACTS - Aboriginals
13
Aboriginals were mistreated by some Explorers
  • For example, some were kidnapped and taken away
    from their people

The introduction of guns made conflicts much more
deadly
  • Guns also resulted in over-hunting, which led to
a decrease in the animal population

15
The Europeans introduced new diseases which the
Aboriginals had no natural defenses
  • Smallpox, Diphtheria, typhus, measles, and
    whooping cough decimated Aboriginal populations

16
The introduction of the fur trade with Europe
almost made the beaver extinct and made the
Aboriginals dependent on trade to get things
17
When missionaries introduced Christianity, they
destroyed many traditional Aboriginal beliefs
18
The expanded settlement of Canada inhibited the
Aboriginals way of life
19
Aboriginal peoples lost their land and free
movement on their land
