Title: Columbia Urban Experience
1Columbia Urban Experience
- Where 4 years of thoughtful and responsible civic
engagement, lasting friendships, and passionate
dedication to the community begin.
2Who We Are
An enthusiastic group of 50 CC, BC, SEAS and GS
incoming first-years with a passion for community
service and the 10 fantastic Leaders who
believe in CUE, this university, and New York
City.
CUE leaders are accomplished leaders in the
Columbia community, who all offer their
experience, insight, and contagious enthusiasm to
a new generation of CUEers each year.
3Service Projects
CUErs participate in community service sites all
over the city in small groups. These projects
are the core of the program. They provide the
students with valuable exposure to the needs and
issues of a large city, as well as to the
strategies and individuals of the organizations
that tackle them. From these experiences, CUErs
can begin to consider, as a community, what their
role as volunteers, students, and concerned
citizens might be.
Previous sites include Harlem YMCA Regents
Homeless Shelter Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health
Center Riverside Park Harlem Community Resource
Center Gods Love We Deliver
4A Community
These incredible students recognize that
community service requires an active community as
well as active service. CUE is an opportunity to
explore relationships in the students new
intersecting communities, from College Walk to
Harlem and Morningside Heights to Chelsea and
Brooklyn.
5Within a Larger Community
CUE is not only an introduction to Columbia, but
is also an introduction to NYC. Every day, CUErs
build connections to various people, places, and
organizations in the city through their service
organizations. Every evening, CUErs explore the
other places and events that make this city the
fantastic place it is!
6Intellectual Engagement
- One of the core values of CUE is
the belief that effective service
requires constant discussion and evaluation. - CUE leaders engage the participants in
discussions on issues pertaining to community
service, their daily activities, and the CU
community. - A highlight of CUE is the final panel of campus
service organizations and community partner
agencies, where CUErs learn how they might get
involved in their new community.
7Lasting Encouragement and Support
CUE05 Halloween Reunion
- CUE leaders ease the transition into college life
before orientation even begins. By the end of the
week, CUErs feel at home on campus. - Leaders welcome any questions that a first-year
may have about life at Columbia, from
registration to the best grocery store. - CUErs become part of our thriving alumni network
of campus leaders, who currently run many of CUs
best student organizations. - Finally, CUErs of all years continue to gather
for reunions for the rest of their time at
Columbia, and for years after!
