Digital Television (DTV)
  • Standard Definition TV (SDTV)
  • Aspect ratio is four feet wide by three feet high
    (43)
  • Has a square appearance
  • Pixels are rectangular-shaped
  • Can be Interlaced or Progressive scanned
  • Interlaced Scanning has the frame/picture
    composed of two fields
  • The first field has a set number of odd lines
    (1,3,5)
  • Second field has a set number of even lines
    (2,4,6)
  • Odd lines are scanned in 1/60 of a second
  • Even lines follow in the next 1/60 of a second
  • This presents an entire frame/picture in 1/30 of
    a second
  • Progressive Scanning will scan all horizontal
lines on to the screen at one time

5
Digital Television (DTV)
  • High Definition TV (HDTV)
  • US development of an HDTV standard underway since
    1987
  • Has twice the vertical and horizontal picture
    resolution
  • Always a screen ratio of 169 with a widescreen
    or letter box appearance
  • Approximately 1/3 larger than 43
  • Reduced motion artifacts (i.e. ghosting)
  • Pixels are square-shaped and smaller in size,
allowing HD picture to contain many more
    horizontal and vertical colored-dots
