longest time you have been away from home? Do you
like to collect patches or postcards or souvenirs
from your trips? One day in 1888, a small dog
wandered into a post office in Albany, New York
and found a place to sleep. Owney began to ride
the wagons that delivered the mail. Then Owney
started jumping onto mail trains. As he traveled,
mail carriers would attach a tag to his collar
that told where he had been. Owney never seemed
to get tired of traveling and made friends with
people all across the United States as he
traveled with the mail. Someone got the idea to
send Owney by steamship on world trip lasting 132
days. Maybe youll want to look at a map or
globe to find out just where Owney traveled. This
book is based on a true story.

15Riding to Washington written by Gwenyth Swain
illustrated by David Geister It is 1963.
Janie, her dad, and others are riding a bus from
Indianapolis to Washington, D.C. to hear a man
named Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak. There
are many people on the bus, some like her, many
are not, and it is a long, long ride. At some of
the stops along the way, Janie is surprised when
they cannot eat at a restaurant because some of
the people on the bus are black and the
restaurant will not serve them. What will happen
when they stop to use the restroom and there is a
sign that says, No coloreds? By the time they
reach Washington, Janie learns that everyone has
got the choice to do the right thing or not.

Squirrel is afraid of LOTS of things from germs

All kinds of protections like parachutes (just in

18Remember, it is easy to participate. Just read or
listen to at least 3 books from the list by March
1, 2010. Voting will take place during your
library class time. Votes will be sent to the
awards committee by March 15 and the winning
titles and authors will be announced at the
annual Pennsylvania School Librarians
