Some General GuidelinesReview of Disability
Etiquette
  • Speak directly to the person, not to an
    interpreter or translator
  • Do not distract service animals
  • Avoid using inappropriate phrases (handicapped,
    crippled etc.)
  • Treat adults in an adult manner (no baby talk)
  • Be at eye-level with someone in wheel chair
  • For deaf people tap the shoulder face them, let
    them know when youre leaving
  • Be patient with people who have speech
    difficulties

When Assisting Customers with Disabilities
  • Offer services for persons with disabilities to
    everyone
  • Dont be afraid to offer assistance if you see a
    customer is struggling
  • Be tactful and diplomatic in offering (Examples)
  • Wait for the customer to tell you if you can
    assist before proceeding
  • Assist the customer in the way the customer has
    requested if it seems reasonable
  • If you cannot assist in the way a customer asks,
    find an alternative, effective solution and offer
    it.
  • Under law, it is not an option to say NO..SORRY
    We are required to provide a reasonable
    accommodation for people with special needs.
