IBO Mission Statement
IBO Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate Organization aims
to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring
young people who help to create a better and more
peaceful world through intercultural
understanding and respect.
To this end the IBO works with schools,
governments and international organizations to
develop challenging programmes of international
education and rigorous assessments.
These programmes encourage students across the
world to become active, compassionate and
lifelong learners who understand that other
people, with their differences, can also be right.

Diploma vs. Certificate
  • IB Diploma Candidate
  • Students take one course from each of the six
    curricular groups
  • Students also work in core elements Theory of
    Knowledge (TOK), extended essay (EE), and
    creativity, action and service (CAS).
  • Must take exams in 3 higher level (HL) courses
    240 instructional hours (may take 4) others will
    be at standard level (SL) 150 hrs.
  • Completes exams given by the IB teacher
    (internal) and exams administered by IBO
    (external).
  • Students can receive up to 7 points per exam.
    Students can earn up to three points for their
    Theory of Knowledge assessment and Extended
    Essay.
  • Students must receive minimum of 24 points to
    receive a diploma.

Diploma Requirements
Diploma vs. Certificate
  • IB Certificate Student
  • Students choose to study in only a specific
    subject area. They will take the course for the
    area and take the appropriate exam.
  • Students will be asked to complete a small amount
    of CAS hours and will be encouraged to take the
    TOK course.
  • To qualify as a transfer student, you must take a
    minimum of three IB courses (TOK is included) and
    sit for all the exams.

Extended Essay
  • Extended Essay (EE) is an in-depth study of a
    limited topic within a subject of students
    choice.
  • Students choose a staff or community mentor who
    is experienced in the area of students topic.
  • The upper limit is 4000 words for EE. Students
    have from Oct. in grade 11 to Oct. in grade 12 to
    complete this paper.

Theory of Knowledge
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is central to the
    educational philosophy of the International
    Baccalaureate.
  • TOK challenges students and teachers to reflect
    critically on diverse ways of knowing and areas
    of knowledge.
  • Students must complete this course as well as a
    1200-1600 word essay from a list of ten titles
    prescribed by IBO. They also complete a 10
    minute presentation in class.

Central Hexagon
Creativity, Action, Service
  • Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) is a framework
    for experiential learning, designed to involve
    students in new roles.
  • Students should be spending time with others to
    build relationships and develop the self-worth of
    both server and served.
  • Students must be involved for at least 150 hours,
    approximately 50 hours in each of the three
    areas.

IB Assessments
  • Students have both external and internal
    assessments.
  • External assessments are given to students on
    campus in May and graded solely by IB officials.
  • Internal assessments are given to students by the
    instructor throughout the courses and are graded
    by the instructor and monitored by IB through
    random samples sent to IB officials.

  • External Assessments (worth 80 of the overall

  • Paper 1 SL 20, HL 20 Multiple choice
    questions that survey curriculum
  • Paper 2 SL 32, ,HL 36 Two parts of analysis
    and solving problems.
  • Part One Analyze a set of data and determine
    the outcome based on previous knowledge and
    experience reading and evaluating similar data in
    similar situations. Write and conclusion in which
    the data are discussed with an analysiss and
    conclusions.
  • Part Two Students answer one questions from a
    choice of four through extended response of
    writing paragraphs analyzing graphs, solving a
    substantial problem or providing analysis and/or
    evaluation and conclusions to be drawn from data
    provided.
  • Paper 3 SL 24, HL 20 Short answer questions in
    the two options studied
  • Internal Assessments (worth 20 of the overall
    score)
  • All students will participate in the group 4
    project. It is the intention that students will
    analyze a common topic or problem. It will be a
    collaborative project where emphasis is on the
    process of the scientific method.

  • External Assessments (worth 80 of the overall
    score)
  • Paper 1 No Calculator 40
  • Section A - Short-response questions 20
  • Section B - Extended response questions 20
  • Paper 2 is the same breakdown, but students use
    a Graphical Calculator
  • (Studies students have two papers one is free
    response and the
  • other is short answer both all the usage of the
    graphical calculator)
  • Internal Assessments (worth 20 of the overall
    score)
  • Students complete a portfolio Type 1 is a
    mathematical investigation and Type 2 is a
    mathematical model.
  • Studies students complete a project based on
    mathematical discovery.

  • Assessments
  • Student and instructor chooses which area is
    external and internal.
  • No matter what the instructor will grade the
    40 as internal assessment
