3REGIONAL CENTRES
- Established under aegis of UN-ECA
- RECTAS Western and Central Africa
- RCMRD Eastern and Southern Africa
- AOCRS Northern Africa
4General Mandate of the Centres
- Promote the use of geo-information technologies
for sustainable development through - - Awareness creation among decision makers
(CODI-Geoinformation WG, Seminars, Visits) - - Capacity Building
- - Advisory services (i.e. NSDI, AFREF etc)
- - Coordination and networking ( AFREF, UNEDRA,
AFRICA-GIS, AARSE, ISPRS, ICA etc) -
5Role of Centres in AFREF
- Coordination And sensitization
- Member states/regions
- Capacity building center
- To develop AFREF/GNSS training programs
- Provide advisory services to member states on
AFREF requirements viz setting CORS systems - Tracking centers
- Establish GNSS base stations-CORS as a
contribution to AFREF/IGS network - May need Hardware/software support
- Data holding centre
- Develop capacity, hardware/software may need
international support - Data processing centres

6BRIEF ON RCMRD ACTIVITIES
- RCMRD was established in Kenya in 1975
-
- It is an Inter-governmental Organization.
- Â
- Currently the Centre has 15 contracting member
States namely -
- There are 10 countries affiliated to the Centre
are
7MISSION AND VISION
- Â Mission To promote the standardization,
harmonization and - development of geo-spatial data and
information and strengthen - the capability and capacity of the member
States in the use of - geo-spatial information for sustainable
development. - Vision To become a Centre of Excellence in
Geo-information production - and management in Africa.
8 OBJECTIVES
- Key Objectives
- To develop and constantly update harmonized and
standardized land - resources and urban development digital data
and information - infrastructure for the region, based on demand.
- Â To develop regional early warning system for
food security, environmental - monitoring and disaster management using mainly
satellite technology. - Â In collaboration with member States national
institutions, undertake - projects for creation of spatial information
system suitable for - development planning at regional and community
levels. - Â Strengthen and harmonize the fragmented
regional and African data using - accurate geodetic GPS techniques and research
into the field and data - processing methodologies.
9OUR OBJECTIVES (Cont..)
Develop capability and capacity in the
maintenance of surveying and mapping
equipment and offer advisory and maintenance
services to the member States. Â In
collaboration with national and international
institutions, undertake research and training
in the application of geo-information in land
resources and urban development mapping and
assessment for sustainable development.
10Our Programs
RCMRD executes its activities through 4 main
Programs/Departments -Â Â Remote Sensing and
Environmental Management -Â Â Resource
Mapping -Â Â Human Resources -Â Â Engineering
Services - Information Technology NB. RCMRD
has 40 permanent staff (75 are technical) , 20
hired through Projects, and also retains a large
pool of consultants in the region whom it calls
upon on need basis.
