Title: Adhesives, Gluing, and Clamping

1
Adhesives, Gluing, and Clamping
  • Chapter 9

2
Adhesives, Cements, Glues
  • Adhesives- made from synthetic materials
  • Cements- are rubber based
  • Glues- are made from natural materials

3
Adhesives
  • Two types
  • Thermoplastics
  • Resistant to moisture
  • Not recommended for high heat areas
  • Thermosets
  • Resistant to water
  • Not affected by heat
  • More costly

4
Thermoplastics
  • Polyvinyl Adhesives- white glue, 30 minute
clamping time, setup in 24 hrs
  • Aliphatic Thermoplastic Resin- yellow glue, will
not clog sandpaper, more resistant to lacquers
    and heat
  • Cross-linking PVA- chemical bonds form as it
    dries, common name Franklins titebond

5
Thermosets
  • Alpha Cyanoacrylate- superglue, works well with
metals, glass, plastics and other nonporous
  • Ureaformaldehyde- powder form, water starts a
chemical reaction, clamping time is about 6 hours

6
Cements
  • Solvent-borne contact cement- frequently used to
bond veneer and plastic laminate to wood
  • Mastic- thick contact cement applied with a
caulking gun, generally used in the construction
    industry

7
Glue
  • Liquid Hide Glue- gaps well and moderate holding
    power
  • Casein Glue- considered water-resistant
  • Blood Albumin, Vegetable, and Fish glue- bond the
    veneers of interior plywood

8
Trial Assemblies
  • Place parts together and insure fit
  • Part should fit together without excessive
    pressure from clamps
  • Determine assembly method

9
Applying Glue
  • Spreading- applying glue
  • Double spreading- applying glue on both sides
  • Single spreading- applying glue to one side

10
Clamps
  • Bar clamps- 2 to 8 ft lengths, will exert up to
    600 lbs
  • C-Clamps- compact clamping
