What is Mental Health?
  • Mental Health affects the way we cope with
forming and sustaining relationships. It is about
our perception of ourselves, others, our
environment and the world in which we live. It is
influenced by our past experiences and our
social, cultural and religious beliefs. The
greater the number and variety of stressors we
experience, and the less psychological resilience
we have, the greater our likelihood of developing
    a mental health problem.

What is Mental Health?
  • Many mental health problems involve more than one
mental health condition. A student may have
Anorexia and an obsessive disorder, or a mood
order and Paranoia. These labels must, however be
treated with caution. They are taken from a
medical model of mental health where the focus is
on diagnosis and effective treatment. Education
needs to place the emphasis on a social model
which focuses on the illness from the point of
view of the individual, and on the changes that
can be made to enable the person to be included
    in that social development.

10
What is Mental Health?
  • Manifestations of mental health problems can
include self harm, eating disorders, behavioural
    difficulties, suicide and attempted suicide.
Mental health problems can affect self esteem,
    motivation, sleep patterns, communication,
    concentration, social skills and relationships
due to their emotional and social demands. The
    effect
  • Of mental health problems on a persons education
    can, clearly, be severe.
