A little history
  • It all began in Bury
  • DROSS delegates collaborated to produce an agreed
    set of learning objectives for basic supervisor
    training
  • Decided that BPS was best placed to recognise
    supervisory competence and establish some
    appropriate award
  • Got the support of DCP in this venture

The Board of Trustees
  • So much liked the proposals that they they
    thought all applied psychologists in the Society
    would want to have access to the planned
    supervisor register and instituted a
    cross-divisional working party to explore the
    possibilities
  • Oddly BoT did not like DROSS and preferred the
    anodyne STAR

Cross-divisional negotiations
  • Strategy to agreed a simplified set of generic
    learning outcomes to which each division could
    add its own division specific criteria as
    required
  • DROSS outcomes painlessly translated into generic
    language
  • Became evident in discussions that clinical
    psychology has, by some distance, the best
    established machinery for supervisor training

Specific Proposals
  • Pay 50 to join the scheme for 3 years
  • Renewal for same period at same cost conditional
    on evidence of having supervised and undertaken
    relevant CPD
  • For first 3 years a regular (ie formal
    training) and grandparenting route will run
    side-by-side but thereafter access to scheme
    only via the regular channel

Grandparenting
  • Designed to encourage early take-up
  • Acknowledges that formal supervisor training
    programmes do not yet exist for most applied
    psychologists in the UK
  • Just need two professional referees prepared to
    attest that X has supervised for a minimum period
    of one year or 30 hours and possesses the all the
    stipulated generic competences

DROSS recommendations
  • One of the two professional referees should
    usually be a tutor involved in supervisor
    training on a clinical course
  • Self-appraisal of supervision competence by the
    applicant with stated CPD goals
  • Delay joining scheme until at least 2 years
    qualified (ie eligible to supervise trainees) as
    per EFPA recommendations

Training implications
  • Criteria for accrediting STAR training programmes
    are needed
  • Common learning objectives provide an obvious
    basis plus some timely amendments of current CTCP
    criteria
  • A lot more for other divisions and training
    programmes to do in the next 3 years when
    grandparenting route closes

DROSS Proposals
  • Achievement of learning outcomes should be
    assessed by explicit evaluation of changes in
    supervisors knowledge (eg using MCQs) and
    behaviour (eg via reflective logs) and by seeking
    structured feedback from supervisees
  • Strategies to promote transfer of learning should
    be put in place

Back to BoT
  • In October Board received report from the
    cross-division working party
  • Supported its recommendations in full but delayed
    implementation from BPS/PSI conference in April
    2008 until unspecified date in the autumn because
    of uncertainties regarding the future
    responsibilities of the Society and HPC

What this means for you lot!
  • It would not be right to set training standards
    for you that are much more stringent than the
    grandparenting option
  • We will see you as assisting in the piloting of
    new ways of evaluating learning on the training
    module
  • So failure to complete all course assignments
    will not jeopardise access to the proposed BPS
    supervisors register

  • No summative judgements will be made this year,
    rather we will provide formative feedback (ie not
    pass/fail)
