• 1 100 Professors-Researchers
• 1 171 technical and administrative staff
• 47 000 students from 66 nationalities
• 6 faculties
• more than 7 Higher School and institutes
• more than 50 labotories

• Campus Network is created since 2000
• ICT Center is created for ensuring
• the daily network management
• the technical support of the park and the
  availability of the services and applications
• Infrastructures and their scalability
•   ICT Center is made up of 5 structures
• User Support
• Network
• E Learning Training
• Applications Development
• Training for Staff

Current network architecture

• More than 6 km for fiber optic
• Core of the network (approximately 3 km) in
  triangle using 200 Mbps
• 2 Mbps bandwidth for Internet Access
• Wireless networks are used to connect 5 distant
  sites (maximum distance approximately 3km)
• Campus network connecting all academic
  departments
• Provide Internet access to all academic
  departments

Current Network architecture

• Applications for university administration
• Students Management (administrative inscriptions,
  teaching, timetable and examination)
• Financial Management (budget and compatibility)
• Human Resource Management

Some problems!!!

• Network initially planned for 300 PCs without
  Internet access it passes from 300 to more than
  3000 PCs with internet access
• Extensions sometimes not controlled
• Some problems with network security
• Old age of network equipments
• Internet Saturation (2 Mbps)
• Current network will not be able to deal with
  new evolutions (Voice over IP, etc.)
• No redundancy in the network

What we do now!!!

• Define a new architecture Separate completely
  administration network and others
• Improve bandwidth up to 10 Mbps (two
  specialized lines , tree ADSL lines)
• Do Security Vlans and Firewall
• Have licences for antivirus for all computers in
  the campus
• To do redundancy
• Change old network equipments with
• Budget of the University
• Equipments received from NRSC (Network Startup
  Resource Center ) (thank!!)

What we need!!!

• To validate this architecture
• Techniques and tools to manage and optimize our
  bandwidth
• Budget to continue to change old equipments
• Training or workshop using open sources for
  improving management of our campus network
• ..

NREN in Senegal ?? First steps

• Our Academy of Science was selected to manage
  this project
• With IDRC (International Development Research
  Centre), two meetings are made with the
  universities , some research centers and Sonatel
  (network operator)
• the ministry for education and the ministry for
  research will be implied in the next meetings
• Write technical and financial project to do NREN
  in Senegal (Now!!!)
