  • 1. Marathon The map on the right is being used
to plan a 26.3 mile marathon. Coordinates are
given in miles. The locations of the
participating towns on the map are Angel City
    (0, 0) Buster (4, 3) Clearfield (9, -2) and
    Curtis (-1, -4).
  • Which of the planned routes is nearest to the
    26.3 mile requirement?
  • Curtis to Clearfield to Angel City to Curtis
  • Curtis to Clearfield to Buster to Angel City to
    Curtis
  • Curtis to Buster to Clearfield to Curtis
  • Curtis to Buster to Angel City to Clearfield to

  • 2. Mapping the Solar System Astronomical Units
  • Astronomers use different units of measure to
calculate the distances that the planets are from
one another and from the sun. They can use
miles, kilometers, light years. Another unit is
an astronomical unit (AU). One AU is equal to
the distance from the earth to the sun, or
    92,960,000 miles.
  • In the table the distances of the planets from
the sun are listed in AUs. On a number line,
place each planet according to its distance from
the sun (to scale). Let the suns position be at
    point zero.
  • Which planets are between Earth and the sun?
  • Which planet is closest to the Earth?
  • Recently NASA sent a probe to Mars. How far is
    Mars from Earth?
  • Which two neighboring planets are furthest apart?
  • The distance between Earth and the moon is
240,000 miles. Calculate the moons distance
from the Earth in astronomical units.
  • Because the moon rotates around the Earth, it is
sometimes between Earth and the sun (solar
eclipse) and other times the Earth is between the
moon and the sun (lunar eclipse). Use exercise
f to position the moon on the number line with
respect to the Earth and the sun during a solar
eclipse and during a lunar eclipse.
