Title: KINS 176 Perceptual Motor Development

1
KINS 176Perceptual Motor Development
  • Dr. Modell
  • Spring 2009

2
Course Overview
3
Motor Behavior
  • Motor Control
  • Motor Learning
  • Motor Development
  • Definitional Issues

4
Definitional Ambiguity
  • (1974) Scholarly Directions Committee
  • changes in motor behavior across the lifespan
which reflect the interactions of a maturing
    organism and its environment
  • (1995) Gallahue Ozmun
  • progressive change in motor behavior throughout
the life cycle, brought about by interaction
among the requirements of the task, the biology
of the individual, and the conditions of the
    environment

5
Human Development
  • Bloom (1956) Three Domains
  • Cognitive
  • Social / Affective
  • Motor

6
Terminology
  • 1. Development
  • 2. Growth
  • 3. Maturation
  • 4. Gross Motor Movement
  • 5. Fine Motor Movement
  • 6. Open Movements
  • 7. Closed Movements
  • Perceptual Motor Development

7
Perceptual Motor Development
  • Quality of movement
  • Ex. Eye-hand Coordination

8
Major Perceptual Motor Components
  • Visual Perception
  • Auditory Perception
  • Kinesthetic Perception
  • Balance
  • Spatial Awareness
  • Temporal Awareness
  • Body Awareness
  • Directional Awareness
  • Crosslateral Integration

9
Learning
  • From a Biological Perspective

10
Learning
  • As we understand the brain more with functional
MRIs and other molecular biological advances it
is becoming clear how we learn
  • Certain parts of the brain (frontal lobes and
limbic system) play a major role in organizing
    the brains activity
  • The limbic system involvement (emotion) sets off
signals to focus attention or not (attenuate
    stimuli)
  • In order for us to learn something, there must be
    some level of emotional involvement
  • FEAR - is typically used (not true life/death)
but fear of exams, tests, grades to motivate
  • The KEY is learning is enhanced as a result of
some level of emotional involvement with the
    content
  • Ex. Sports, movie quotes, music

11
Emotions and Active Learning
  • Music, for example, heightens emotional
    involvement in learning
  • Heightened involvement creates a stronger neural
connection, which in turn makes it easier to
    remember information
  • Ex. Play your favorite song in your head. Do
you have memories associated with that song?
  • KEY Create elevated emotional involvement in
    learning environments for enhanced learning
  • Ex. Disability Lectures
