Focus items
  • Subscale RV
  • Item no 18
  • Item no 21
  • Item no 9
  • Subscale BN
  • Item no 6
  • Item no 16

12
Items 18 and 21 A church
  • Item no 21
  • US I can follow the words of a sermon when
    listening to a religious service
  • DK Jeg kan godt følge prædikenen når jeg er til
    gudstjeneste
  • Item no18
  • USIts hard for me to understand what is being
said at lectures or church services
  • DK Det er svært for mig at forstå hvad der
bliver sagt ved foredrag, eller gudstjenester

13
Item 18 and 21 Hearing Aid style
  • US Primarily ITE
  • DK Primarily BTE

14
Item 6
  • US When Im listening to the news on the car
radio, and family members are talking, I have
    trouble hearing the news
  • DK Når jeg kører i en bil med familie eller
bekendte der snakker, kan jeg ikke samtidig høre
    hyheder på bilradioen.
  • The common Danish reaction to this situation is
that they NEVER understand in this situation and
therefore it is rated as NEVER (have a problem).

15
Item 16
  • US I can understand conversations even when
    several people are talking
  • DK Jeg kan godt deltage i en samtale selvom der
er mange mennesker der taler omkring mig
  • Danish translation is inaccurate. understand is
    translated into participate in.

16
Item 9
  • US When I am talking with someone across a large
empty room, I understand the words
  • DK Hvis en person taler til mig i et stort tomt
rum, kan jeg godt forstå hvad der bliver sagt
  • Many Danish subjects are puzzled by the wording
    of this phrase.
  • A situation which does not occur very often

17
Conclusion
  • Some items cause confusion to subjects
  • Partly related to cultural differences
  • Partly related to actual wording of sentences
  • Partly related to direction on answering scale
    causing confusion
  • Partly related to inaccuracy of translation

18
Recommendation
  • Be very careful when instructing clients how to
    fill in the questionnaire
  • Check focus items and look for odd answers
  • Idea to homogenize the statements in order to
make the answering scale point in the same
    direction to avoid confusion
