4
Step 1
  • Dont Panic!

5
Step 2 Define the Organisation
  • Not a vision/mission statement (that was
Management 124 - Basics of Strategic Goals)
  • Who are the partners?
  • What role do they play?
  • Who is ultimately responsible?

6
Step 2 the WISH Decision
  • A joint project between Mount Carmel Clinic and
    the University of Manitoba
  • Pros
  • Not yet another organisation
  • Utilize the resources of both
  • Commitment of the partners
  • Cons
  • Longer time to do stuff
  • Legal agreements . . .

7
Step 2 Huh?
  • It means
  • MCC/UofM shoulder joint responsibility
  • MCC provides location, staff, security
  • UofM provides clinic manager, mentors
  • Etc

8
Step 3 Who is the Organisation
  • Steering Committee
  • Makes all final decisions regarding the budget,
    etc.
  • Maintains the partners interest
  • Student Executive Council
  • Puts plans into effect
  • A lot of the initiative and ideas are generated
    here

9
Step 3 Steering Committee
  • 2 UofM representatives
  • 2 MCC representatives
  • 2 Students from WISH Student Executive
    (Co-chairs)
  • 1 Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA)
    representative
  • Ex officio Clinic Manager
  • Student driven meeting

10
Step 3 WISH MaHSSA
  • An incorporated student body was necessary for
    the legal agreement
  • We desired this body to be interprofessional,
with strong existing connexions to the WISH
    project
  • MaHSSA (the Manitoba NaHSSA) fit this description

11
Step 3 Why the WRHA?
  • Our largest single donor
  • Will help us integrate into the larger healthcare
    system in Winnipeg
  • i.e. public health nurses, translators, public
health workshops and clinics for referral

12
Step 3 Clinic Manager
  • Decided to follow the SWITCH model and hire a
    Clinic Manager
  • Catch 22 situation till hired . . .
  • Job plug wish.med.umanitoba.ca
  • Under applications
  • Closing date is April 10th

13
Step 4 Get Money
  • (unique?) in that we started with money through
the Alan Klass Program in Health Equity
  • Approached WRHA
  • Extremely supportive
  • Good aid in re-organising and selling the
    budget
  • Student body (medical)
  • Only 25 each -gt 10,000/yr

14
Step 4 Get Money
  • Winnipeg Funding Agencies
  • Neighbourhoods Alive!
  • Failed application, but developed community
    support
  • Winnipeg Foundation
  • 2yr commitment
  • Larger donor family interested in helping more .
    . .

15
Step 4 Get Money (Tips)
  • Re-do, re-do, then re-do the budget
  • Show that you have other donors
  • always hard to get the first donor
  • Get help from your donors
  • Play the its been done before card
  • Use failure to your advantage

16
Step 5 Talk to the Law
  • We are in the process of meeting with licensing
    bodies in Manitoba
  • All are supportive of the initiative, they are
    just concerned
  • Reassurance (remember, you are doing something
    groundbreaking)
  • Pull the its been done before card

17
Step 6 Get Staff and Students
  • Decide on a clinic framework
  • again, we shamelessly borrowed from SWITCH
  • Decide how volunteers can sign up
  • Purchased a custom designed scheduling system
    from a Winnipeg non-profit (Peaceworks)
  • Staff positions integrated with MCC

18
Step 7 Get Community
  • Talking face-to-face
  • Friendly posters
  • Community events
  • Using MCC staff as promoters
  • Social team going out on the street
  • Time to build trust

19
Step 8 Have Fun!
  • Do I really need to explain this?
