  looks like a verb.
• While crossing the running river, Jessie decided

• Doc becomes his teacher
• However Doc has a drinking problem and he uses
  the euphemism the wolves were howling to
  describe when he was drunk.
• Doc never registered as an alien and was arrested
  according to the Aliens Act of 1939

  Peekays loss of innocence from Ch 9 continues
  with Docs arrest and Peekays involvement with
  Docs trial and incarceration.
• Peekay becomes an accidental victim of,

  Docs trial an observer of the immorality within
  the prison system a moral support for Doc in his
  struggle to conquer the wolves.
• Peekay matures significantly.

  beings brutal, cruel and unjust in their

  arrest of Doc and the brutal treatment of Geel
  Piet in order to allow the reader to make his/her
  own judgements.
• Peekays tone is neutral when it could have been
  harsh and critical
• His use of irony allows him to subtly poke fun at
  the prison staff and thereby illustrate the
  injustices without being overtly critical.

  Zyls office and all the dead, stuffed animals
  which were described was humorously and
  ironically reversed with van Zyl as an animal
  lover.
• Bryce Courtenay wrote this novel during apartheid
  in South Africa, so as a writer he needed to be
  delicate in his criticism of the social
  structures in the country.

  trick . the Sailor Salute or the Liverpool
  Kiss which he successfully uses on Snotnose
  Bronkhurst.
• Because of his victory over the larger and older
  bully Bronkhurst, Peekay earns a reputation as a
  leader smart and tough.

• Thus we have the beginnings of Peekay as a
  leader, winner, and one who has a special power
  the power of one.
• The motif of mystery and mysticism continues in
  the novel through Peekay. His devious schemes to
  smuggle in tobacco and smuggle letters out for
  the prisoners earns him respect and devotion form
  the prisoners. Word seeps out into the
  surrounding community of the power of Peekay and
  so begins the legend of the Tadpole Angel.
