Chapters 10 11
  • Peekay drops his camouflage and reveals his
    intelligence
  • Doc becomes his teacher
  • However Doc has a drinking problem and he uses
the euphemism the wolves were howling to
    describe when he was drunk.
  • Doc never registered as an alien and was arrested
according to the Aliens Act of 1939

9
Chapters 10 11
  • The foreshadowing of Docs impending turmoil and
Peekays loss of innocence from Ch 9 continues
with Docs arrest and Peekays involvement with
    Docs trial and incarceration.
  • Peekay becomes an accidental victim of,
authoritative violence a witness and defender in
Docs trial an observer of the immorality within
the prison system a moral support for Doc in his
    struggle to conquer the wolves.
  • Peekay matures significantly.

10
Chapters 10 11
  • Amid the chaos, brutality and injustice Peekay
realizes he can learn to box.
  • His prison mentors are seen as complex human
beings brutal, cruel and unjust in their
treatment of prisoners, yet kind and loving in
    many other situations.
  • Peekay reports diplomatically on the state of
affairs in South Africa at the time.

11
Chapters 10 11
  • Peekay reports dispassionately on the cruel
arrest of Doc and the brutal treatment of Geel
Piet in order to allow the reader to make his/her
    own judgements.
  • Peekays tone is neutral when it could have been
    harsh and critical
  • His use of irony allows him to subtly poke fun at
the prison staff and thereby illustrate the
    injustices without being overtly critical.

12
Chapters 10 11
  • For example, his description of Kommandant van
Zyls office and all the dead, stuffed animals
which were described was humorously and
ironically reversed with van Zyl as an animal
    lover.
  • Bryce Courtenay wrote this novel during apartheid
in South Africa, so as a writer he needed to be
delicate in his criticism of the social
    structures in the country.

13
Chapters 10 11
  • Secondly, Courtenay did not want to write a book
about good and evil, but about people, prison
    staff, as humans not monsters.
  • Docs triumph over the brawling crowd with his
rendition of Beethoven proves that despite our
differences we have a universal spirit which
    binds us together.

14
Chapters 10 11
  • Peekay settles into a routine of boxing and piano
    lessons
  • The prison staff allows the lessons to continue
because they give the prison a sense of social
    status, having two classical musicians
  • Doc assists Peekays boxing with musical
    analogies.

15
Chapters 10 11
  • He says that in music, as in boxing, exercises
    make up the foundation.
  • Peekay becomes part of the shadow world his
    consistency made him invisible
  • The motif of camouflage takes on a new form
  • Peekay and Docs friendship blossoms

16
Chapters 10 11
  • Routines develop boxing and piano lessons
cleaning the cottage on Sundays Marie provides
tobacco to Grandpa but he doesnt like the taste
so they find a new use for it.
  • Peekay discovers the underworld of the prison
through the friendship he develops with Geel Piet.

17
Chapters 10 11
  • Geel Piet is a master of camouflage and a
survivor he initiates the novels extended
metaphor of shadows Geel Piet runs the
prisons shadowy black market world as neither a
    black nor white man.
  • Geel Piet teaches Peekay how to box since he was
once the colored lightweight champion of the Cape
    Province

18
Chapters 10 11
  • Geel Piet teaches Peekay only one dirty boxing
trick . the Sailor Salute or the Liverpool
Kiss which he successfully uses on Snotnose
    Bronkhurst.
  • Because of his victory over the larger and older
bully Bronkhurst, Peekay earns a reputation as a
    leader smart and tough.

19
Chapters 10 11
  • Thus we have the beginnings of Peekay as a
leader, winner, and one who has a special power
    the power of one.
  • The motif of mystery and mysticism continues in
the novel through Peekay. His devious schemes to
smuggle in tobacco and smuggle letters out for
the prisoners earns him respect and devotion form
the prisoners. Word seeps out into the
surrounding community of the power of Peekay and
so begins the legend of the Tadpole Angel.
