2
Project Description
  • High-Level Vision Statement
  • To provide clothing equipment for police
officers, firefighters, and athletes with light,
    form-fitting garments including body-sensing
    technology.

3
Basic Features
  • Clothes will provide additional safety measures,
such as bulletproofing, dynamic camouflage, heat
absorption and release, alert status, and
    built-in micro-radio/GPS support. Apparel will
also be considerably lighter and all allow for
more mobility than what is currently used.

4
Stakeholders
  • Police
  • Business People
  • Fire Fighters
  • Athletes

5
Platform Capabilities and Constraints
  • Apparel should be form-fitting, so proper size
per officer is especially important. All parts
and devices on suit should offer as little
hindrance (preferably none) to physical movement
    and activity. Possible devices requiring
activation switches (such as radios, PASSes,
firearms, etc.) must be placed in strategically
on the body to allow for quick access.

6
Police
  • Richard Rich-Fritz Fritz, 24, is a rookie
officer. He has been out of the academy and on
active duty for the past six months, mostly on
street patrols. He has an adventurous personality
(with a history of sky-diving and
bungee-jumping), which leads to an enthusiastic
(if sometimes reckless) streak. Though he has not
yet found himself in any particularly dangerous
encounters yet, he is often failing to apprehend
criminals and lawbreakers, due to inexperience,
which has been causing frustration both with him
and the rest of the force. Additional training
would be helpful, as would the improved
equipment, and Fritzs risk-taking nature would
be quite receptive to its implementation.

7
Critical Task 1
  • Officer Howard Carrel just received a dispatch.
Apparently, a man has committed armed robbery in
a local store. After making his inquiries at the
crime scene, he spots a suspicious individual,
wearing a ski mask and backpack, running through
the streets. Carrel orders him to halt, and is
seemingly ignored. He orders again, and this
time, the suspect breaks into a run. Carrel
    follows in pursuit.
  • Though physically in shape, it is a hot summer
day, and Carrel is feeling his temperature rise
swiftly as he runs. He fears that he may not be
able to catch up to and apprehend the suspect.
Furthermore, his standard issue bulletproof vest
is further slowing him down through its heavy
weight. The suspect, well ahead of him, darts
into an alley, and Carrel follows. A shot goes
off, and a bullet hits Carrel in the torso. He
feels knocked back hard, but is otherwise
unharmed, thanks to the vest. He dives behind a
garbage can, narrowly avoiding two more shots,
takes out his own weapon, and dart out and
returns fire. The suspect falls to the ground.
  • The issues in this scenario include the lack of
temperature control, and the bulkiness of the
armor. Both hindered Carrel in his chase of the
armed man, possibly preventing him from catching
up. In which case, no death may have been
involved, and the officer would have been under
less risk. The vest saving his life in the alley
is a statement of irony, because though it is a
great burden for their work, it is still vitally
important for police safety. Armor that provides
similar protection without weighing the officer
down would be a desirable goal.

Business
  • Edward Conklin is a 49 year old father of 3, who
works at the New York Stock Exchange. Since his
business revolves around information, he cant be
without a link to current events or his
associates, a lapse in communication can cause
millions of dollars in losses. On the occasion he
needs to go on a business trip, having to carry
all of the necessities such as cell phone,
laptop, PDA, etc., can become quite a hassle. On
the off chance that something is left behind, he
could miss that vital call or email that makes or
breaks a big trade. In such an occurrence, it
would not be far past the administration of his
company to fire him, as such mistakes are never
taken lightly. Forgetting something is just one
small problem that may happen, since electronics
are known for going haywire at times, or simply
running out of battery power. In todays business
world, everything is powered by electronics, so
digital data is the norm, basically making the
need for such devices a must.
  •       On a recent trip to Belgium, Edward brought
along one of our business-style smart shirts. He
was required to travel to many different
locations to participate in multiple meetings
throughout the day, not having much time in
between. The integrated wireless and touch screen
allows him to check his email and online
references throughout the day without having to
setup his laptop. In the same respect, all of his
contacts are stored in the memory to allow them
to be brought up at any point, and dialed if need
be, routing the call so only he can hear. The
built-in GPS system allows him to know where he
is going in relation to the place where he needs
to be, giving him turn-by-turn directions in the
same way he is able to receive calls. The built
in temperature system will keep him cool even if
he starts to get hot or vice versa, so if he is
getting nervous, others will be less likely to
notice from sweating or turning red. The system
automatically attempts to keep his body at a
stable temperature, but if he so chooses, he can
    manually adjust it.

9
Critical Task 2
  • 0. Perform in a business situation  1. Check
    email wirelessly
  •             1.1 Negotiate wireless signals
  •             1.2 Detect secure signal
  •             1.3 Connect to the signal
  •       2. Receive phone calls
  •       3. Get directions to destination
  •             3.1 Determine current location using
    GPS
  •             3.2 Determine destination using GPS
  •             3.3 Create route using both
  •       4. Control body temperature
  •             4.1 Determine current body
    temperature
  •             4.2 Check with default
  •             4.3  Adjust to default

10
Usability Goal
  • Edward can be seen as an intermediate user, he
has used many technologies throughout his
lifetime, mainly to help with his career, so the
range of such devices may be limited. He will
have received no formal training on this product,
only what is in the instruction manual/tutorial.
To have bought such a gadget would show that he
is interested in it and eager to learn more about
it. One way to determine how successful the
product is for him, we can measure the time it
takes to fully complete commands, such as
checking email, getting directions, or making a
call. If any one action takes longer than five
seconds per menu item (barring extensive reading
or processing time) then it will need to be
revised. Once we have viewed those results, we
can then see if attempts to do the same task take
as long as the first time and concurrent times
after that. If time to complete the tasks under
normal circumstances stays constant or improve,
it will be considered successful. Finally, a
survey can be created to give to anyone who makes
this type of purchase. Throwing away outliers,
the answers will be processed and if 75 or more
answers are positive, the product is successful.

Fire Fighters
  • Pedro (Pokey) Hernandez
  •       Pokey is a 25 year old Rochester
Firefighter. He has been working on the team for
almost three years now. He is a high school
graduate and a community college dropout. Once he
realized that he did not want to be a slave to a
big corporation, but wanted to serve his
community more instead, he decided to take up
    firefighting.
  •       Pokey is definitely the fearless type. His
youth gives him the impression that he can take
on any problem head first. He feels strong and
capable, and believes that there is no fire or
emergency that he cannot control. He is confident
that he can save peoples lives, and he knows
that his colleagues are also confident in his
ability. He is not afraid to make mistakes, but
this does get him into trouble at times. Still,
he knows that he will learn the right way in due
    time.

12
Critical Task 3
  • 0.Rescue citizens trapped in burning building.
  • 1.Get suited up for rescue.
  • 1.1 Put on fire protective clothing.
  • 1.1.1 Put on boots.
  • 1.1.2 Put on pants.
  • 1.1.3 Put on shirt.
  • 1.1.4 Put on jacket.
  • 1.2 Equip helmet.
  • 1.3 Equip oxygen tank and mask.
  • 2.Get to location of the building.
  • 2.1 Get address of crime from caller.
  • 2.2 Load up fire engine.
  • 2.3 Input address into navigation system.
  • 2.4 Follow directions to the scene.
  • 3.Assess the situation.
  • 3.1 Find the location of victims.
  • 3.1.1 See who is visible from outside.
  • 3.1.2 Ask any witnesses.
  • 3.1.3 Ask victims that previously escaped.

13
Usability Goal
  • User
  • Pokey A 25 year-old intermediate user, has
been on the job almost three years, makes
small mistakes from time to time.
  • Task
  • To rescue the victims stuck inside of a burning
    building.
  • Metrics
  • To control at least 50 of the fire within the
first 20 minutes of arrival, and rescue all
    (100) of the victims trapped inside.
  • Acceptance Criteria
  • Pokey can reach the given metric at least 95 of
    all dangerous burning building situations.

Athletes
  • User Persona 1  12 year old, Timmy has heart
disease in his family, but he loves to play
baseball.  His mom decides to buy on of our
shirts to monitor Timmy's heart while he plays.
One Saturday afternoon, while Timmy's team is
warming up in the outfield, Timmy is struck in
the chest with a ball and his heart stops.
Timmy's teammates think he is playing a joke on
them and don't realize that something is really
wrong for several minutes.  By the time Timmy's
coach can get to his cell phone, the ambulance
has already arrived.  Timmy's shirt had detected
the sudden drop in heart rate and had immediately
    notified emergency services.

15
Critical Task 4
  • 0. Monitor the wearer for any medical
emergency.       1.  Measure heart beat for any
sudden drop or unsafe increase.       2.
Measure entire area of the shirt for any impact
    that could cause injury
  • 2.1 Monitor for any sudden impact
2.2 Calculate the PSI of any sudden force
applied to the shirt               2.3 If force
was great enough to cause injury contact
    ambulance
  • 3.  Measure core temperature and regulate to
    37C
  • 3.1 Call ambulance for any uncontrollable
    fluxuation

16
Usability Goal Setting
  • User
  • Timmy A 12 year-old novice user, wears the
shirt to monitor his heart condition and should
play a passive role in whether the shirt does
    its job or not.
  • Task
  • To monitor and provide medical assistance to
athletes who are injured on the playing field.
  • Metrics
  • To monitor at 100 of the injuries and vital
signs of the athlete wearing the shirt and to
provide medical assistance to 100 of those who
    require it.
