Title: LEADERSHIP STYLES

1
LEADERSHIP STYLES
  • Autocratic Leadership
  • Laissez-faire Leadership
  • Democratic Leadership

2
Autocratic Leadership
  • Expect orders to be obeyed without question
  • Assume employees need to be watched all the time
  • Control workers through fear and intimidation
  • Employees only do what is expected, nothing else

3
DISADVANTAGES
  • Employees dont like to work for these leaders
  • Lack of trust does not inspire creativity in
    employees
  • Credit is rarely given to employees
  • Employees work hard when leader is present but
    not once they leave

4
LAISSEZ-FAIRE LEADERSHIPHANDS-OFF
  • Goals may or may not be set for the employee
  • Little or no direction is provided
  • Employees are in charge of themselves but the
manager needs to be available for questions and
    problems
  • Shows trust and confidence in workers

5
WHEN NOT TO USE THE HANDS-OFF APPROACH
  • Feedback can not be provided
  • Employees are insecure
  • Managers are not sure of their own role and
    expect employees to cover

6
DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP
  • Managers and employees work together to make
    decisions
  • New ideas are encouraged
  • Everyone listens to others opinions

7
ADVANTAGES
  • Employees more productive and creative
  • Inspired to work harder because you are not
    constantly looking over their shoulder
  • If your manager has confidence in you, your more
likely to feel confidence in them

8
WHAT SHOULD INFLUENCE WHICH STYLE YOU CHOOSE
  • Background. What personality, knowledge, values,
ethics, and experiences does the manager have.
What does he or she think will work?
  • Employee. Style should vary depending upon the
individual employee and what he or she will
    respond best to.
  • The company. The traditions, values, philosophy,
and concerns of the company will influence how a
    manager acts.
