William the Conqueror

• William the Conqueror wanted to build a castle
  inside of a fort so that future kings could live
  here.
• Williams reign 1066-1087

William Continued

• After he died other kings built smaller towers
  and walls around the castle William had built,
  and all the buildings together became known as
  the Tower of London.

What the Tower was used for

• Royal Residence
• Armory
• The Crown Jewels
• Prison (Enemies of the Crown)
• Ravens
• Beefeaters
• Zoo

Beefeaters

• Forty Yeoman Warders Guard The Tower and live
  there, since the 14th century
• Their Uniforms resemble the same uniforms that
  they would have in the Tudor days

Ravens

• The Legend is that Charles II was told if the
  Ravens left the Tower the Monarchy would fall. He
  insured that a limited number would be kept there
  permanently.

Western Entrance and Traders gate

• Trader's gate was built in between 1275 and 1279
  for a new entrance for the king
• This gate is more famously known for bringing
  traders accused of treason into the Tower

The Crown Jewels

• The worlds best known collection of precious
  objects displayed in an expatiation room.
• The Crown Jewels have stayed in the Tower since
  the 14th century, except during the second world
  war where the jewels were removed for a short
  time and then replaced in 1945.

• The worlds Biggest Diamond is in the Scepter with
  a cross which dates back to (1660)

Bloody Tower

• Was Built in the early 1220s
• Was reconstructed in 1360 by Edward III
• Sir Walter Ralegh
• The Princes in the Tower

Bloody Tower

• Edward IVs two sons were put in the tower by
  their uncle Richard III after their father died
  in 1438.
• The Princes disappeared mysteriously their uncle
  Richard was crowned, the skeletons were found
  nearby after he was crowned.

White Tower

• When The Tower of London was finished in 1097,
  The White Tower was the tallest building in
  London 27m and 90feet tall

The White Tower

• In the Tower in 1399 King Richard II was
  condemned as a tyrant and forced to abdicate by
  his cousin, Henry of Bolingbroke who became King
  Henry IV (1399-1413)

Tower Green

• The Tower Green is the place of many Traditional
  Ceremonies such as Swearing in of Yeoman Warders,
  Parades, Installation of the Constable
• Two of Henry VIIIs wives died here, Anne Boleyn
  and Catherine Howard

Beauchamp Tower

• Was built in 1281 by Edward I.
• Many high ranking prisoners and their servants
  stayed here while they were held here.
• Things that are on display are inscribed stones
  that prisoners have
• Cross bows
