Scotland 2002-2006
  • Emily Fraser, Bruce Mackinnon, Lynsey F Yeoman,
Keith Simpson, Jonathan G Fox, Barbara Young,

2
Aims
  • Establish incidence of adult native renal biopsy
in Scotland in the last 5 years
  • Analyse the age and gender profile
  • Compare practice between different units
  • International comparison

3
Data collection
  • 7 centres
  • Data from renal pathologist in each centre
  • Consecutive adult native renal biopsies performed
    between 2002 and 2006
  • Sex and age of patient at time of biopsy
  • Population values from 2001 census

4
Results
  • 2369 native biopsies
  • 126.8 biopsies per million population per year
    (PMP/yr)
  • 7 centres covering 3.8 million people (75.1 of
    population)
  • Glasgow and Clyde (GC)
  • Tayside (Tay)
  • Dumfries and Galloway (DG)
  • Ayrshire and Arran (AA)
  • Lanarkshire (Lan)
  • Grampian (Gramp)
  • Highland (High)

5
Overall biopsies in Scotland PMP
6
Average biopsy incidence in each centre
7
Biopsy incidence by centre 2002-2006
8
Average proportion of males undergoing biopsy
9
Average age of patients undergoing biopsy
10
Summary of data
  • Biopsy incidence stable over the 5y period
  • Incidence stable within centres, although
    incidence varies between centres
  • The majority of centres biopsy more men
  • Centres biopsy patients of a similar age

11
International comparison
12
Conclusions
  • Differences in biopsy incidence between centres
    in Scotland
  • Concordance between centres with respect to age
    and sex of patients biopsied
  • Overall higher rate than other European countries
  • Further study required to establish if difference
in disease incidence or nephrologist practice
