Title: Status Report

Status Report
- Gran Sasso - system test facility
- - RPC under test
- - automatic push test table
- RPC tests in Padova
- RPC tests at CERN -gt Dario Autiero

- Electronics
- Situation on Production
2Cosmic rays tests
- A cosmic test station is being setup.
- Big involvement for the LNGS electronic and
- mechanical workshops.
- Trigger
- 2 planes (4?4 m2 each) using glass RPCs
- 1 cm strips (flat cables glued on polypropylene)
- 1st coordinate, digital readout (MACRO GSC
cards) - 2nd coordinate using time information (?t lt 50
ps). - Bakelite RPCs
- 3 boxes (12 ? 3) under test at once
- use MACRO readout strips (3 cm) for both coord.
- digital readout (MACRO GSC).

3LNGS infrastructures
- Experimental hall free for OPERA
- On-going process for the gas system (4
independent distribution point inside the hall
gas mixed inside) ? October 2002 - backup solution for gas ready for end of June
- Trigger planes
- Mechanical structure finished
- RPCs glass delivered, ended to assemble the
detectors (16 m2) - electronics for t1-t2 tested, final production
started. - RPC under test
- measures fixed, 2 box prototypes ready -gt OK
- Strip pannels prototypes ready
- card for signal inversion (HV 4kV) under
assembling.
4LNGS infrastructures (2)
- DAQ under development, it uses a system similar
to that currently used for MONOLITH prototype and
for GSC-II project), started to test with the
OPERA RPC prototypes available at LNGS.

15Push test results
One tested chamber had several unglued spacers
(no glue on one side was find after having opened
the chamber. The final test will be
completely automated, reducing the operator time
and improving the sensitivity of the test.
16Automatization done by ROME technician with
expertise from ATLAS, LHCB
this is the solenoid to brign up the weights nn
the single spacer
Work to be finished for June
17- All the chain (including DISPLAY of events) has
been tested with the three RPC prototypes
available from april.
- System test under full control for July with the
38 new RPC pre-production chs
- READY to check RPC chambers from September 2002
18MECHANICS
- drawings of frame and culla for installation
done - tendering on the way on
- few offers already obtained
- discussion with Frascati engenieers (24 May)
- to integrate RPC installation and magnets
- 2 prototypes for the transportation boxes done.
Almost ok.
- Full prototype for strips (1 full layer in x and
1 in y) for end July
19(No Transcript)
20ELECTRONICS
New Front-End card ready (2nd prototype) - 64
channels - differential receivers exaustively
studied (good response until 5 mV) - Zin 100
? - input polarization for at least two
samples - threshold tunable 0 300 mV for
groups of 16 channels - mask single input -
digital test-in - FastOR over 16 channels 1 ms
long, TTL output at 50 ? - generation of
interrupt on the FastOR - external trigger/gate
for all the channel. TTL output at high Z -
double buffer for the events - VME read-out
Tried first contact with DAQ people (!) Need real
meeting -gt in Padova around 8 10 July
More people are probably to be involved (Gran
Sasso, Napoli)
21RPC PRODUCTION
- In the period January April situation of
crisis due to bakelite not glueing anymore (!) - It seems over
- Original production plan out-of-order
- Start to elaborate a new production plan, to be
stated next Friday, June 14th in Rome - For OPERA, 300 chambers seem foreseen in the
period September December 2002 - 700 chambers in the period
January December 2003 - If INSTALLATION starts in February 2003, we are
JUST IN TIME !
500 chambers are necessary for one
Spectrometer Each Spectrometer has to be
installed, together with RPCs in 6 months
22Summary
(most solid and sure floor, but something is
vague)
- System test at Gran Sasso very well in time and
succesfully set-up - RPC pre-production will allow complete test of
the system for end of August - Many tests on the full scale RPC prototypes -gt
good results - Mechanics on the way on. First prototype for
installation end of July - Electronics well suited. Need FE DAQ
integration. More people are coming - Production for OPERA at General Technica tight
but acceptable.
- Confidence in RPC capability on the long term
