Tartu - city of good thoughts
  • The time-honoured university, museum-rich and
Hanseatic city of Tartu lies on the banks of the
River Emajõgi. The capital of southern Estonia is
the second largest city in the country and the
oldest in the Baltic States. Tartu is a modern
city with a rich historical heritage and culture.
One of Tartu s most important historical
monuments is the St. Johns Church with its
thousand terracotta sculptures. In and around
Tartu are abundant opportunities for recreation
    and leisure.

THE OLD TOWN

THE OLD TOWN
5
Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats)
  • The central Tartu Town Hall Square is surrounded
by buildings built in the classical style. Since
1998 the square is decorated by the Kissing
    Students fountain. Throughout centuries the
centre of town activity has been Town Hall
Square, the history of which goes back to ancient
times. At that time the market place was the
square lying between the fortress on Toome Hill
and the harbour on the banks of the Emajõgi
River. This tradition persisted for centuries.
During the medieval period the Town Hall was
built here. The present building is the third one
    in the same place.

6
Town Hall
  • On the first floor of the present Town Hall
building were a jail and public scale hall, on
the upper floors the town council. The Town Hall
was planned by the town building chief of the
time, Johann Heinrich Bartholomäus Walter from
Rostock. The corner stone was laid in 1782, and
though the official opening was in 1786 the
finishing work went on up through 1789.

7
Raekoja Square 18
  • The longitudinal wall of the building toward the
river was built on the basis of the old town
wall, while the other side was built on a new
foundation. This is why the house is now askew
and is popularly called the Tower of Pisa.

8
Arched Bridge
  • In the 18th century the first stone bridge in the
Baltics was built at the end of the Town Hall
Square, with two triumph arches and a lifting
centre, which was dedicated to Catherine II and
was opened for traffic in 1784. The bridge was
destroyed in World War II, now it can only be
admired by way of the model bridge, which was
    created in 2004.

9
Observatory
  • The observatory, designed by university architect
J.W. Krause, was built at the beginning of the
19th century. In the years 1820-1839 the director
of the observatory was astronomer F.W. Struve,
who acquired for the observatory the largest
available Frauhofer refractor and published a
    general catalogue of binary stars.

10
Angels Bridge (Inglisild) on Toome Hill
  • Angels Bridge, located on Toome hill, was built
in the 19th century and spans Lossi Street. The
bridge, designed by J.W. Krause, was built in
1814-1816 and replaced an earlier temporary
    bridge.

11
  • The medieval town wall surrounded Toome hill and
stretched between Magasini and Vabaduse streets
on the eastern slope. On the northern slope the
wall ran in the area of Laia Street, and on the
southern side, in the area of Poe Street.
Altogether there were 27 towers in the wall, 9 of
    which had gates.

12
Botanical Garden
  • The botanical gardens of Tartu University, which
are among the oldest in eastern Europe, are also
    rich in sculptures.

13
Tartu University
  • The main building of Tartu University is one of
the most outstanding examples of classical
    architecture in Estonia.

14
Gunpowder Cellar
  • The Gunpowder Cellar was dug into the side of the
hill in 1767 as part of the complex of the
bishops citadel. It was used as a gunpowder
cellar until 1809. Until 1982 it served as a
storage room for many different enterprises, and
was later developed into a eating place. Today
the building hosts a beer restaurant carrying the
    same name.

15
Ruins of Toome Cathedral
  • The name of Tartus Toome Hill is derived from
the Toomkirik or Toom Cathedral of the areas
bishopric. For that time the cathedral was truly
massive, being the largest religious building in
all of the Liivimaa territory. Building of the
cathedral began in the 13th century and was
    completed in 15th century as a triple-aisled
    basilica.
