controversial monuments. Commissioned by the
French government in the late 1800s, its
construction was intended both to commemorate the
dead of the 1870 Franco-Russian War and to plead
for forgiveness. But the forgiveness sought was
not for the government but for the socialists who
had opposed the government in 1871. While some
Parisians dislike the architecture of the
basilica, there is general agreement that the
views from the hill on which it stands are
