CHYHYRYN DISTRICT

• Chyhyryn has lots of names and titles the
  historical core of the nation, the centre of the
  state-building, and the first hetman capital. It
  remembers hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi a prominent
  Ukrainian statesmen and warrior, hetman of the
  Right-bank Ukraine Petro Doroshenko, one of the
  Koliyivshchyna leaders Maksym Zaliznyak, and many
  others. Chyhyryn churches and monasteries enjoyed
  the popularity of educational and cultural
  centres of Ukraine. Chyhyryn traditions and
  customs date back to the dawn of the countrys
  history.
• In 1989 here was created the State Historical
  and Cultural Reservev that embraced cultural and
  natural monuments of Chyhyryn, Subotiv, and
  Kholodnyi Yar ravine.

• In the year of Bohdan Khmelnytskyis 400
  anniversary, (1999), the reserve was granted a
  status of a national one.
• Nowadays the National Historical and Cultural
  Reserve Chyhyryn covers the territory of 1160
  hectares thus housing thousands of archeological,
  historical, architectural and nature monuments.
  Among them one should mention a unique Skythian
  settlement one of the biggest in Ukraine located
  in the ravine Kholodnyi Yar, Illya Church in
  Subotiv, Troitska church of the Motronynskyi
  nunnery in the village of Melnyky. Known outside
  Chyhyryn Doroshenko Bastion in Chyhyryn, a
  hydrological monument Tri krynytsi (Three
  Wells) by Subotiv, and a 1000 year old oak called
  Zaliznyaks in the village of Buda.
