Title: COOP AND GLOSS
1COOP AND GLOSS
- Keith R. Thompson
- Dalhousie University, Canada
- What is COOP?
- Its status
- Importance of GLOSS to COOP
- Requirements and collaboration
2WHAT IS GOOS?
- GOOS Global Ocean Observing System
- a global network that systematically
acquires, integrates and distributes ocean
observations, and generates analyses, forecasts
and other useful products

OOPC open ocean services (including weather) and
climate. SST,SSS, surface fluxes, sea level, sea
ice, dissolved CO2, upper ocean T and S COOP
coastal focus (includes LMR and HOTO). Concerns
50 live within 200km of coast, rising to 66
within 50 years, loss of wetlands, coral reefs
and mangroves.
Ocean Observations Panel for Climate Role of the
oceans in climate variability
Coastal Ocean Observations Panel Provision of
goods and services, changes in coastal
ecosystems, and societal impacts
4COOP THEMES
- PRESERVE (habitat loss nutrient enrichment
algal blooms pollution) - PROMOTE (ecosystem-based management aquaculture)
- MITIGATE (storm surges tropical storm damage
coastal erosion sea-level rise) - MARINE OPERATIONS (navigation spills ballast
water)
- Coastal Marine Services and Hazards
- Living Marine Resources
- Ecosystem Health
- Public Health
5COOP CONCERNS
- Marine observations
- Models and their predictions
- Generation and distribution of products
- Data Management and Communications
- Enabling research and Pilot Projects
- Training and transfer of technology
6GLOBAL ? REGIONAL
- Global observing system with regional
enhancements - Global system initially existing observing
elements (e.g. satellites, GLOSS) - Global network will monitor large-scale changes,
provide background for regional changes, set
standards and controls, help validate satellite
observations,
7OBSERVING SYSTEM DESIGN
Observations will be used to predict and detect
change in response to user needs
8RANKED CORE VARIABLES
Prediction Detection
- Water temperature
- Currents
- Salinity
- Sea level
- Surface waves
- Sediment characteristics
- Benthic biomass
- Changes in bathymetry
- Dissolved oxygen
- Shoreline position
- Sea level
- Changes in bathymetry
- Currents
- Extent of submerged vegetation
- Salinity
- Water temperature
- Sediment characteristics
- Shoreline position
- eH in sediment
- Dissolved oxygen
9DISCUSSION
- The Coast Ocean Observations Panel
- Strongly supports an expanded GLOSS core network
(more stations and variables). - Anticipates the need for regional densification,
and a critical role for regional alliances. - Has requirements beyond those of OOPC (e.g.
extremes, tides, higher spatial resolution). - Plans to collaborate strongly with GLOSS as its
implementation plan is written, and beyond.
Mutual benefit.
