UA Nursing School Expansion

• University/Industry Task Force 2002
• UAA was graduating about 96 RN candidates
  annually and 10-20 from Weber State
• Recommendation double the number of registered
  nurse graduates by 2006 to about 220 on track
  to achieve
• In subsequent years, will graduate 240-250 per
  year

Industry Need for Nurses

• Current industry demand for new graduates is
  about 200-220/year (per August 2003 survey)
• Other information from survey
• 52 Organizations, 3522 Positions
• 275 RN Vacancies or 8 (down from 12)
• 68 New Graduate Openings (25)
• Preceptor programs underway to support new
  graduate hiring and specialty skills development
  (ASHNHA, DOL, UA, others)
• Will do further study to try to trend demand more
  closely (in conjunction with DOL and industry)

Nursing Program Expansion Methods

• BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM
• Expansion of the bachelors program was planned in
  three ways
• Increase the size of each admission cohort 32 to
  40
• Increase the number of admission cohorts from two
  to three per year
• Enhance the RN-gtBSN track for distance delivery
• ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAM
• Expansion of the associates degree program was
  planned to occur in two ways
• Expand the number of communities where the
  program is delivered
• Add an additional cohort in Anchorage
• PRACTICAL NURSE PROGRAM
• Expansion to new sites (Anchorage, Bethel,
  Fairbanks, Ketchikan, Valley)
• One-year vocational program
• Distance delivery format for didactic on-site
  clinical instruction
• Future deliver in sites that request it
• Has improved articulation with UAA AAS program
