Rope Care
  • Important to take care of your rope so it lasts.
  • Always untie knots when done.
  • Do not drag the rope on the ground.
  • Store in a clean, dry, room or container.
  • If used in salt water, rinse and dry before
    storage.
  • Keep out of sunlight
  • At season end, wash rope in mild detergent and
    dry before storage.

6
Rope Care
How To Properly Coil a Rope
  • Keep rope dry and clean as you work.
  • Shake out twists and kinks, untie knots.
  • Rope may naturally coil in one direction.
  • Use foot to hold down rope as you coil, unless in
    dusty location.
  • Hold in left hand and coil rope clockwise.

7
Rope Care
How To Properly Coil a Rope
  • Make even sweep with right hand and pull coils of
same length to the left hand.
  • Use your thumb to untwist as you coil, keep in
    place with your right hand.
  • Wrap end of rope around middle, pull last loop
over the end and pull the end to tighten.
  • Best method is to use a hook and loop fasteners
    or a binding rope.

9
Rope Whipping
  • A part of rope care is caring for the ends.
  • All ropes fray if not properly taken care of.
  • Synthetic ropes are flame seared.
  • Synthetic ropes can also be taped (electrical or
    duck).
  • Natural rope traditionally whipped using a
    smaller rope or sinew.

Lesson Two - Objectives
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of a figure eight knot.
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of a square knot.

12
Figure Eight Knot
DR Workbook Page 235
Uses As a stopper knot at the end of a rope, to
weigh down rope used on water, to decorate the
ends of rope.
13
Figure Eight Knot
  • How to tie
  • Make underhand loop.
  • Bring end around and over standing part.
  • Pass end under then through the loop.

14
Square Knot
DR Workbook Page 235
Uses For tying reefing sails, tying packages,
tying tourniquets, tying shoelaces, to complete
lashings.
15
Square Knot
  • How to tie
  • Right over left and through.
  • Left over right and through.
  • Pull ends away from each other to tighten.

16
Lesson Three - Objectives
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of a sheet bend knot.
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of a clove hitch knot.

17
Sheet bend Knot
DR Workbook Page 235
Uses To join two ropes of unequal sizes, to join
two corners of a flag to the rope used for
raising the flag.
18
Sheet bend Knot
Note Keep end on same side as larger ropes end.
  • How to tie
  • Form bight on larger rope.
  • Bring thinner rope end through the bight.
  • Twist over and under the bight, bring under
itself, but on top of the thicker rope.

19
Clove Hitch
DR Workbook Page 236
Uses To secure a tent pole, as a starter knot
for all lashing.
20
Clove Hitch
  • How to tie
  • Make turn with rope around pole and over itself.
  • Make a second turn around the post.
  • Pull the end up under the second turn.
  • Pull both ends to tighten.

21
Clove Hitch
  • How to tie, free hand
  • Make underhand loop.
  • Make second underhand loop on the standing part,
    next to the first.
  • Place second loop behind first.
  • Place over pole and tighten.

22
Lesson Four - Objectives
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of the two half hitches.
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of the taut line hitch.

23
Two Half Hitches
DR Workbook Page 236
Uses To tie a rope to a tree or boat to tie an
animal to a ring to make macrame crafts to
fasten a rope to a ring, hook, handle, pole,
rail, or beam.
24
Two Half Hitches
  • How to tie
  • Rope end around pole, cross over standing part,
make circle and pull through the loop.
  • Cross over standing part a second time, circle
and pull through the loop again.
  • Pull end and standing part to tighten.

25
Taut Line Hitch
DR Workbook Page 236
Uses To secure tent guy lines, to secure loads
on pickups and trailers.
26
Taut Line Hitch
  • How to tie
  • Rope end around pole, cross over standing part,
make two circles to the inside of the loop.
  • Make another turn with end around standing part,
bring over and under loop formed.
  • Pull tight move hitch by pushing up or down
    standing part.

27
Lesson Five - Objectives
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of a bowline knot.
  • You will be able to demonstrate tying and explain
the purpose of the sheepshank knot.

28
Bowline
DR Workbook Page 236
Uses To pull or lift people out of pits, holes,
gullies to tie one rope to another securely by
tying a bowline in the end of each rope and
hooking them together for running rigging and
for hoisting on a sailboat.
29
Bowline
  • How to tie
  • Make overhand loop with end toward you.
  • Pass end through loop, behind standing part and
    through the loop again.
  • Draw tight by pulling end bight together verse
    the standing part.

30
Sheepshank
DR Workbook Page 236
Uses To shorten rope, to tow boats on the
running rigging, to keep slack out of the way, to
shorten damaged line with the damaged area
passing through the knot.
31
Sheepshank
  • How to tie
  • Make half hitch by twisting clockwise with left
    hand.
  • Make two more half hitches same diameter as the
    first.
  • Overlap the three hitches with the rope that goes
