2
Fuel Quality Has Declined
  • Over the last two decades, the cetane number and
the API gravity (the basic measures of crude oil
    quality) have declined.
  • Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Bulletin
    872243
  • Diesel fuel quality has deteriorated for the
past 20 years and is expected to continue this
    trend for the foreseeable future.
  • Americans Society for Testing Materials Pub.
    10056

3
Fuel Quality Has Declined Because
  • Rougher grades of crude oil are being extracted.
  • Producers take shortcuts in refining.
  • The best parts of crude are being used to produce
gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, and other
    chemicals.
  • The refining process used to meet new EPA
regulations on ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD)
results in reduced fuel economy and severe fuel
    system wear.

5
What is the 1 Cause ofPoor Engine Performance?
Answer Low-Quality Diesel Fuel
6
Low Cetane
Problem 1
  • Decline of Cetane Number
  • A steady decline in the cetane number in diesel
fuels has been noted starting in the 1960's and
    continuing through the early 2000's.
  • In 2005, Exxon reported that North American
diesel fuels averaged only 43 cetane.
  • The Engine Manufacturing Association (EMA)
requires a minimum of 50 cetane for optimal
    engine performance.
  • By 2007, the EPA mandated that ULSD fuel must
    have a minimum 48 cetane.

7
Below 50 Cetane Fuel Causes
  • Increased exhaust emissions
  • Poor combustion efficiency
  • Lower mileage, i.e. poor fueleconomy
  • Harder starting
  • Detonation wear (internal explosions that cause
damage to pistons, heads, rings, valves, and
    cylinder liners).
  • Higher temperatures required to cold start diesel
engines (low cetane fuels require higher
    temperatures to burn).

8
Poor Lubricity
Problem 2
  • Sulfur is a natural occurring element that has
always been used in diesel fuel as a lubricant
for injectors, valves, and other moving parts in
    a diesel engine
  • Sulfur is natural in its relationship to diesel
fuel. It is not an additive. The process to
remove sulfur from diesel fuel is both expensive
and damaging to the fuel quality.
  • The removal of most of the sulfur from diesel
fuel can cause at lease two major wear problems
in fuel injection systems mechanical wear and
    chemical wear.

9
Removal of Sulfur can Cause
  • Mechanical Wear
  • The removal of sulfur causes the fuel to become
very dry. This dry fuel results in 5 times more
scuffing wear in fuel injection systems.
  • Chemical Wear
  • The hydro-treating process used to remove sulfur
also removes natural corrosion inhibitors in
diesel fuel. This causes the fuel to become
    corrosive.
  • Since 1993, injection system wear has increased
    500.
  • Worn injector systems result in poor fuel
    economy, excessive emissions, equipment down
    time, and engine repair costs.
  • Note Most off-road diesel fuel sold is ultra
    low-sulfur dyed with red dye.

10
Contaminants
Problem 3
  • Contaminants Form Deposits
  • Today's diesel fuel contains high levels of
contaminants that clog injectors and contribute
    to air pollution.
  • Clean injectors spray an even, flower-like spray
pattern of fuel on the head of the piston. As the
piston reaches top dead center, the fuel begins
to burn and continues to slowly burn throughout
the power stroke. This slow, low-temperature fuel
burn creates a very powerful down stroke and
ensures a complete burn of fuel because of the
even distribution of fuel within the cylinder
    cavity.

11
Contaminants
Problem 3
  • Contaminants Form Deposits
  • Clogged or dirty injectors cause an uneven
distribution of fuel within the cylinder. This
causes an incomplete burning of the fuel. The
unburned fuel is then exhausted from the engine
causing environmental issues as well as a
noticeable loss of power. As this process
continues, engine power declines and deposits are
    created that compound the problems.

12
Types of Contaminants
  • Bio-diesel
  • Bio-diesel naturally becomes thick at lower
temperatures causing filter plugging and starting
    problems.
  • Wax
  • Wax found in diesel fuel gels at low temperatures
causing filter plugging and starting problems
much the same as in bio-fuels.
  • Acids
  • Some contaminants in diesel fuel form acids in
the combustion process resulting in corrosive
wear, ring deterioration, blow-by, and loss of
    compression.

13
Water Contamination Biological Growth
Problem 4
  • Condensation, rainwater, and seepage cause water
    contamination in diesel fuel.
  • Water Contamination
  • Poor combustion
  • Clogged filters
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Bacterial and fungal growth

14
Water Contamination Biological Growth
Problem 4
  • Biological Growth
  • Bacteria and fungus enter fuel through water
    contamination or air vents.
  • There are 14 types of bacteria that feed on
diesel fuel and 7 types of fungus that feed on
    hydrocarbons.
  • Slime formation caused by bacteria and its
byproducts clogs filters and injector tips.
  • Corrosive acids created by the digestion of
diesel fuel by fungus and bacteria cause wear on
injector tips and damage storage tanks.
  • The slime as well as the black carbon looking
material that clogs fuel filters is a result of
    bacterial growth in fuel tanks.

15
Water Contamination Biological Growth
Problem 4
  • Bio-Diesel
  • Because bio-diesel is derived from plant
products, it is especially susceptible to
    biological growth.
  • Important note If your fuel filters are plugged
with black, carbon looking material, or if slime
is present in your filters, you have biological
    growth in your fuel system.

16
Exhaust Emissions
Problem 5
  • Exhaust emissions have become one of the major
    problems of the 21st century.
  • Engine Emissions
  • Emissions from hydrocarbon burned fuels are
damaging the ozone layer, and global warming is
attributed to fuel emissions. Severe health
problems are common in large cities where smog
from exhaust fumes is a huge and growing problem.
  • The EPA has mandated that emissions be
drastically reduced, resulting in new engine
    designs and fuel regulations.

17
Exhaust Emissions
Problem 5
  • Engine Emissions (continued)
  • Unfortunately, as emission requirements become
more stringent, the quality of diesel fuel has
    declined.
  • In 1998, the EPA set emission requirements. In
2002 the new requirements called for a 33
reduction of the 1998 emission levels. Now in
2008, there is an 82 reduction of the 2002
    requirements in place.

18
Now, more important than ever before, we must
consistently improve the quality of the fuel that
we use in our equipment.
19
Contaminated Fuel Dirty Fuel Tanks
Problem 6
  • Contaminated Fuel
  • Contaminated fuel is every fuel consumer's worst
nightmare. It can become a problem that grows
over a period of time, or it can be an instant
problem if a tank of dirty fuel is delivered into
    your tanks.
  • Fuel contamination can be recognized by some or
all of the following dark colored diesel fuel,
black diesel fuel, fuel filters containing clear
or black slime, fuel filters plugged with a
black, carbon-like material, and excessive water
in your water separator or fuel filters.
  • Many diesel fuel users know there are problems
with their tanks because every time the tanks are
filled with new fuel, filter problems begin.
  • Regardless of how the fuel becomes contaminated,
the problem is great and can cause immediate
    engine failure.

20
Contaminated Fuel Dirty Fuel Tanks
Problem 6
  • Dirty Fuel Tanks
  • All fuel tanks get dirty. If you think about it,
there is nothing in this world that does not
require cleaning from time to time. From our cars
and trucks to the clothes we wear, everything
    needs to be cleaned.
  • Diesel fuel tanks have unique problems. Their
insides cannot be seen, and because they are
usually filled and emptied on a regular basis, we
assume that they stay as clean as they were when
we first bought them. But nothing could be
further from the truth. Fuel tanks gather
condensation from the natural heating and cooling
from the sun. The water has no place to go but
inside the tank. Dirt, dust, and other
contaminates gather from the vents in the tanks.
As you saw earlier, bacteria, fungi, and their
byproducts are all left behind in your fuel tanks.

21
Contaminated Fuel Dirty Fuel Tanks
Problem 6
  • Dirty Fuel Tanks (continued)
  • The water settles to the bottom of your fuel
tanks and causes rust to form. The bacteria and
fungi digests your fuel and acid deposits are
formed that cause additional damage to your
    tanks.
  • The 1 cause of catastrophic engine failure is
    dirty diesel fuel.

22

    fuel consumption by over 10.

31
Clean the Fuel Tanks
Step 3
  • Fuel tanks must be cleaned in order to ensure
success in a fuel quality control program.
  • Your fuel tanks have been an incubator for the
growth of bacteria and fungus as long as you have
owned them. They also have been collecting water,
dust, dirt, and other contaminates on a daily
basis. These materials have to be removed in
order for the 4-Step Program to work.

32
Clean the Fuel Tanks
Step 3
  • So far, we have killed all the bacteria, fungus,
and other microbial growth with our biocide and
we have added Diesel MateTM to improve the
quality of your diesel fuel and de-emulsify the
water in the fuel. It is now time to remove the
    unwanted material.
  • Until now, a dirty fuel tank was a major problem.
Bulk fuel users had to dispose of the
contaminated fuel and re-fill your tanks. The
hazard waste charge along with the fuel cost and
replacement cost of the fuel was a major expense.
    Until now

33
Clean the Fuel Tanks
Step 3
  • Diesel Fuel Masters, LLC has been treating diesel
fuel and cleaning diesel fuel tanks for over 30
years. Our process is simple and very effective.
  • We come to your location totally clean and we
leave clean. There is no hazardous waste and no
fuel loss. Our equipment removes all water,
bacteria, fungus, and other contaminates from
your fuel. You lose no fuel whatsoever. You only
    lose the problem.
  • No hazardous waste, no fuel loss, little or no
    down time.
  • With diesel fuel approaching 4.00 per gallon,
clean fuel and fuel tanks is a must.

34
Diesel Fuel Analysis

concentration of over 14 different types of
bacteria known to infect fuel and fuel storage
    tanks.
  • Analyze Fungi Growth analyzes over 7 typesof
fungi known to infect diesel fuel.

35
Diesel Fuel Analysis
Step 4
  • Analyze Water Concentration determines the
percentage of water contamination present in the
fuel. (Manual water inspections only show the
amount of water that is in the bottom of your
tank. Laboratory tests show the water suspended
    in your fuel.)
  • Analyze Base Cetane Level Analyzes the Cetane
level which is determined by ASTM D 613-86.
  • Treatment Determination reports the amount of
Diesel MateTM in the sample and provides
recommendations on the treat rate with respect to
    these results.

36
Diesel Fuel Analysis
Step 4
  • Fast and Reliable Results reports are mailed or
faxed within 48 hours of analysis.
  • Diesel fuel analysis enables managers to easily
manage the condition of their fuel and maintain a
history of the condition of their fuel tanks.
