Title: GEOBODIES The carbonate ramp

1
GEOBODIES The carbonate ramp
Well over 90 of the carbonate sediments found
in modern environments are thought to be
biological in origin and form under marine
conditions. A carbonate rimmed shelf model,
found at Bahr al Hikman, is a good example of a
modern carbonate factory, and here are some of
the geobodies present
???
Relate the geobodies to the pictures and the
cross section. See the arrow with the matching
color
2
The shore is a high energy environment and
consists mainly of fine to coarse sand
Today, corals and red algae construct the reef
frame
Sabkah is a coastal salt flat built by
progradation of the coast
Cross-section of a carbonate factory
The tidal channel is a shifting energy
environment connecting the lagoon with the open
sea
The dunes protect the lagoon from the sea
The lagoon has a widespread deposition of
burrowed fossiliferous units
3
Heteroginity Vs. Lateral continuity
Reservoir units
A shore system with prograding clinoforms builts
out into the sea. After a long time, this system
ends up as a reservoir. The clinoforms represents
the sediment accumulating at a spesific time. The
clinoforms can be heterogeneous and at the same
time disturb the lateral continuity as you see on
the picture. This because the sediments that is
deposited can change through time. The number 1
clinoform could be deposited at a time of high
biological activity, leaving the clinoform with
shells and coral debris, while the number 2
clinoform is deposited during a different
environment, and consists of just sand.
