Title: Welcome to the Higher Education evening SWCHS

1
Welcome to the Higher Education evening _at_ SWCHS
2
Why go to University?
  • Looking back, I feel that I missed out by not
  • going on to Higher Education I could have
  • met a wider cross section of people and it
  • could also have enhanced my existing
  • career options.

3
How can parents help?
  • A poll commissioned for the latest Higher
    Education campaign shows
  • that many mature students had experienced a range
    of barriers that
  • prevented them going to university straight from
    school.
  • 11 said their parents influenced their decision
    not to go
  • 77 regret the missed opportunities and
    experiences
  • Others said they didnt think Higher Education
    was for people
  • like me and that at the time, they couldnt see
    the point.

4
How can parents help?
  • As the poll highlights, young people need the
right support from parents when theyre faced
with decisions about that important next step.
  • Encouraging your son or daughter to consider
their options is crucial you may need to boost
their confidence to help them see Higher
Education is a good choice for them. And it could
be down to you to spell out the benefits, in
terms of a far wider choice of career and life
opportunities. just a few years down the line

5
How can parents help?
  • throughout the three years I learned how to
cook, and manage money, too. Did my parents get
involved with my choice to study at Cardiff? Yes
they came with me to a couple of open days, and
they informed themselves about the whole
application process, which helped a lot. The
advice they gave me when I left home? Be safe
    and sensible!
  • I couldnt have followed
  • the career I wanted
  • without a degree.

6
How can parents help?
  • Finding out together what the options are can
keep the possibility of Higher Education real and
    open.
  • No parent wants to pressurise their child into
university but your encouragement can help them
see that a fulfilling career is worth aiming for
