Sentinel Sites Surveillance System
  • Objective
  • What you need from SSSS.

and confirmed, malaria deaths suspected /
    confirmed from the Sentinel sites.

3
Sentinel Sites Surveillance System
  • Definition
  • Sentinel Site a site which generate the data
information for malaria cases in the catchments
    area of the health facility.
  • Surveillance A systemic method of monitoring the
occurrence of diseases in individuals in order
to control its spread in the community

4
Sentinel Sites Surveillance System
  • Surveillance is primarily concerned with
    Incidence and health Events.
  • Selection of Health events depends upon
    priorities of country and international
    reporting.
  • Disease surveillance depend upon the country
public health importance and potential for their
    prevention and control.
  • Poor health care coverage have problems in
    recording and reporting diagnosis and
    differentiating new cases from old.
  • Disease surveillance provides information on
their importance rather any estimates of
    prevalence or incidence.
  • Surveillance most comprehensive when based on
    population information rather than facilities

5
Sentinel Sites Surveillance System
  • Obtaining information. Formal or Informal way of
    collecting, managing and interpreting data.
  • Routine health service record (All records)
  • Household registration. CHW maintained the record
of all household in their catchments area.
    (different population group)
  • Special surveys. For population characteristics,
    like, mortality, fertility, prevalence of
    disease. KAP surveys
  • Communication.
  • Evaluating the Information. This requires
  • Regular discussion about information,
relevant training, careful supervision and good
    communication.

Sentinel Sites Surveillance System
  • Constrains
  • Lack of Health facility communication system
  • Security alert in some areas.
  • Delayed reporting from the SS
  • Budget ? -
  • Lack of resources
  • Security phase increased the budget requirements
  • Lack of training to health professional at
    peripheral level

19
Sentinel Sites Surveillance System
  • Recommendation
  • Training of health professional in developing
    effective surveillance system
  • Increase the number of SS surveillance (Southern
    zone)
  • obtain funds for maintaining the sentinel
    sites.
  • Develop better communication system from
    peripheral to central
