Conference in Kansas City, Missouri One
hundred and fifteen Kentucky student members and
20 advisors of the SkillsUSA-VICA organization
attended the National Leadership and Skills
Conference (NLSC) held June 23-27 in Kansas City,
Missouri to showcase their skills in the career
and technical education competition. An
estimated 12,500 people, including teachers,
students and business partners from around the
country were present at the weeklong event, which
focused on occupational and employability skills
such as communications, teamwork and goal
setting. A patriotic opening ceremony kicked
off the conference on Tuesday June 23 with
contestant meetings and competitions starting the
following day. A variety of professional
development activities and seminars for
instructors and students were held throughout the
conference along with delegate sessions for
student association business as well as a large
exposition of trade and technical education
called SkillsUSAs TECHPO. Also on the
agenda, during the SkillsUSA Championships, was a
Career Fair, which featured industry
representatives to discuss career opportunities
with students. The actual competition
championships were held June 26 with more than
4000 career and technical education students-all
state contest winners-competing in 75 different
trade, technical and leadership fields.
3 Students worked against the clock and each
other, proving their expertise in occupations
such as electronics, computer-aided drafting,
computer networking, precision machining, medical
assisting and culinary arts. Contests were
run with the help of businesses, corporations,
trade associations and labor organizations.
The week was capped off with the awards ceremony,
where the top competitors were awarded gold,
silver and bronze medallions. Some competitors
also received scholarships and/or tools of their
trade provided by industry sponsors.
