- Following September 11, the CDC made funding
available to all states to develop and enhance
emergency response capabilities. - Wisconsin chose to distribute much of this money
at a regional level to maximize resources and
foster cooperation among public health agencies.
3Fox Valley Public Health Preparedness Consortium
- The Fox Valley Consortium includes 6 county and 4
city health departments, and serves over 450,000
people.

- A public health emergency is a situation where
many people have been or could be exposed to an
extremely dangerous condition or communicable
disease. - The City of Appleton Health Department has done
planning to prepare for these types of
situations.

- These plans include strategies for providing
vaccine or prophylaxis to the entire community.

- Treatment would be distributed to the community
through large clinics set up at large community
facilities, such as high schools.

- Vaccinate/distribute medications, Check-out, Exit

- Triage - Separate ill patients away from the
general population. - Registration- Register patients and provide
location for patients to complete their
paperwork.

- Education- Provide disease specific information
to patients. - Screening - Review paperwork.
- Medical Evaluation - Provide personal counseling
and answer medical questions.

- Vaccination or Distribution- Provide vaccinations
or distribute medications -
- Check-out- Assure that all patients have received
treatment and have had final questions answered.
12August 9, 2004 Exercise
- An exercise was conducted at Appleton North High
School - Staff from the City of Appleton Health Department
along with volunteers from Thrivent, Appleton
Area School District, Fox Valley Technical
College, and UW-Health worked as staff for the
clinic.

clinic? - Working under state and federal guidelines, it is
our intent to treat volunteers and household
contacts prior to them working at a clinic.

- How long will I have to work as a volunteer?
- Mass clinics will run 8-12 hour shifts and may be
open for several days to weeks.

- What training do I need to volunteer?
- All training needed to be a volunteer will be
provided prior to your shift at the clinic. No
advanced training is required.
