HDV / DV for the Access Grid

Extending vic for DV / HDV in the AccessGrid
  • The version of the HDV / DV services that will be
highlighted is based upon the work that
  • Chris Willing
  • and
  • Leon Zadorin
  • from
  • University of Queensland
  • did to extend vic

3
High Quality
  • What is high quality?
  • better than H261
  • better or equal to PAL/NTSC
  • This project
  • DV (firewire)?
  • 420 encoded PAL size
  • 411 encoded NTSC size
  • HDV (firewire)?
  • built in MPEG2 compressed
  • H263

4
Comparison of H261, DV, HDV
5
Why vic?
  • Why?
  • familiarity
  • cross platform compatibility
  • ease of integration into AG toolkit
  • multiple streams
  • first test (H263) worked
  • Why not DVTS (GIST's Ext.VideoSvc)?
  • RFC but few implementations
  • not really cross platform
  • not really multiple streams

6
The Extended vic
  • Based on ANL codebase
  • Before the change over to the Sumover media tools
  • Additional functionality via
  • ffmpeg (codecs)?
  • imlib2 (non-accelerated display)?

7
Networks
  • DV 25Mb/s ctl audio 30Mb/s
    fec 36Mb/s
  • HDV 25Mb/s fixed by in-camera MPEG2 encoder

8
Networks
  • Tuning required
  • network (NDT, iperf)?
  • connection to network (network buffer sizes)?
  • how vic/linux uses network
  • tc tbf (traffic control token bucket filter)?
  • pspacer (precise software pacer)?

9
Networks
  • How to protect low bandwidth sites?
  • new services allowing stream selection
    (need AG3.1)?
  •
  • How to still include low bandwidth sites?
  • send duplicate H261 stream

10
New DVideoConsumerService
11
Example
12
SimpleHDVideoService
  • Unlike the DVideoConsumerService, which uses a
different multicast address for each stream
  • The SimpleHDVideoService transmits all HDV/DV
    streams to the one address
  • This means that you can see everyone's streams
    through the one vic application
  • Like the standard H261 video service

13
Current Status
  • Linux
  • capture rendering
  •  WindowsXP
  • rendering only alpha version only limited
    testing
  • Anyone developer interested?
  • OSX
  • Anyone developer interested?

14
Requirements
  • DV camera (firewire)?
  • or
  • composite video with converter
  • (canopus ADVC-55, ADVC-110)?
  •
  • Hardware accelerated graphics card with xvideo
    blitter capability (NVidia)?

15
Future work
  • Complete WindowsXP, OSX ports
  • Integrate into UCL code base
  • HD without latency
  • YUV signal via HDMI
  • Blackmagic Intensity IO board (USD250)?
  • MPEG4 compression (ffmpeg library)?
  • DXT compression?

16
Future work
  • Planned bundled releases for Centos5, RHEL5 and
Fedora9 in a couple of months
  • Therefore, once the AG is installed for the above
distributions, the HDV /DV will be included

17
Installation
  • The HDV/DV services come pre-bundled with
  • Slackware 12.1
  • Ubuntu Hardy and Gutsy
  • Debian Etch
  • Install Guide for Fedora 8 (applicable for Fedora
    9) can be found at http//www.accessgrid.org/node/
    1099

18
Download
  • http//www.vislab.uq.edu.au
  • gt Software downloads
  • gt Advanced video (DV/HDV)?

19
Acknowledgements
  • Chris Willing (UQ) for majority of presentation
    material
