2FAMILY GROUP CONFERENCING THE NEXT STEP
The day
Chair Andy Couldrick, Head of Early Years and
Family Support, Oxfordshire CC will introduce the
sessions. Andy is currently implementing FGCs in
his third Local Authority.
Family group conferences place families and
children at the forefront of decision making and
planning for their children. Families are
empowered to take responsibility to find ways to
address difficulties they are facing. They use
resources offered from organisations along with
their own resources to make a plan to keep their
child safe. At the end of a conference the aim is
to have a plan that both the family and the
professionals involved with them can sign up to.
Keynote speaker Mike Doolan, Adjunct Senior
Fellow at the School of Social Work and Human
Services, University of Canterbury, New
Zealand. The national head of New Zealand social
services during the implementation of the
original FGC model and subsequently a leading
architect of FGC development in the UK. Mikes
presentation will address the strategic
challenges facing Local Authorities and their
partners.
Family Group Conferences -
They have been used successfully in Childrens
Social Care, education and Youth Offending
services, often avoiding accommodation, school
exclusions and custody.
