Title: Cycles of Life

1
Cycles of Life
2
Key Terms
  • Nutrients chemical elements that are used by
organisms to build and operate their bodies
  • Biotic living organisms
  • Abiotic non-living part of the environment
  • Closed System little or no input of new
materials from outside the system (eg earth)

3
Carbon Cycle
  • Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are the
two main processes in the carbon cycle.
  • Photosynthesis is the conversion of energy from
the Sun to sugar by green plants.
  • Cellular respiration is the conversion of sugar
    into energy in organisms.

4
  • Photosynthesis
  • Carbon dioxide water energy ? sugar
    oxygen
  • (C02) (H20)
    (C6H12O6) (O2)
  • Cellular Respiration
  • oxygen sugar ? carbon dioxide water
    energy
  • (O2) (C6H12O6) (C02)
    (H20)

Questions
  • What three elements are carbohydrates (sugar)
    made from?
  • What are the reactants (ingredients) in the
    equation for photosynthesis?
  • What are the products?
  • What are the reactants (ingredients) in the
    equation for cellular respiration?
  • What are the products?

7
Carboniferous Period
  • During the carboniferous period, 300 million
years ago, large areas of swamp became filled
    with decaying plant material.

8
  • The plant material was buried under layers of
sediment. Because there was no oxygen,
decomposers couldnt break it down and it became
    stuck.

9
  • Over millions of years, the plant matter was
compressed and converted into coal and oil
    (fossil fuels).

11
  • Draw your own diagram of the carbon cycle that
    includes
  • Plants
  • Animals
  • Fossil fuels
  • Atmosphere

12
Global Warming
  • Because there is so much carbon in fossil fuels
(millions of years of compression!), there is
excessive carbon dioxide emitted when we burn
    them.
