Establishment and development of UkrSGRI
3
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome Statement
This year Ukrainian State Geological Research
Institute celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. It
is an important milestone in the featured history
of UkrSGRI which is direct successor of the
Carpathian school of petroleum scientists created
in the beginning of XX century. For the years
passed since the institute establishment UkrSGRI
is transformed into one of the major research
units of Ukraine enabled to cover actually all
needs of the national geology in the fundamental
and applied studies. With the highly qualified
personnel, at present institute occupies the
leading positions by various directions of
geological activities provided by the State
Geological Survey and ensuring scientific support
to the entire cycle of geological studies for oil
and gas, ore and non-ore minerals and underground
waters. The institute participated in discovery
of Solokhivske, Kegychivske, Skorobagatske,
Boryslavske, Dolynske and other oil and gas
deposits, coal beds, Sergiivske gold,
Shevchenkivske rare-metal, Osykivske phosphorite
deposits, Podolian hydrogeological area of
mineral waters etc. The high qualification and
professionalism was shown by the institute
members who worked in 23 countries of Europe,
Asia, Africa and America. Nowadays the institute
maintains tight collaboration with numerous
enterprises, academic institutes and universities
of Ukraine as well as geological organizations of
other countries. Geologists of any countries are
welcomed to further collaboration.

reports are produced for the media distribution.
Internet-site of UkrSGRI (www.ukrdrgi.gov.ua)
matches the modern information requirements and
offers the visitors the actual overview of the
Institute and overall geological activities in
Ukraine.
7
Oil and Gas 1/3
UkrSGRI provides scientific support and
assistance to the geological works for oil and
gas in all oil-gas-bearing regions of Ukraine
Dniprovsko-Donetska Depression (DDD),
Fore-Carpathian Trough and Carpathians,
Azovo-Chornomorskiy Basin. On the ground of
research works and analysis the
oil-gas-perspective object dynamics over
1986-2006 the directions for hydrocarbon reserve
growth are defined for the years 2007-2010 and
proposals are substantiated with regard to the
strategy of Ukrainian oil-gas complex development
until the year 2030. The prominent achievement
of the Institute scientists comprise the
six-volume edition Atlas of Oil and Gas Deposits
of Ukraine which was used in development the
national program of the country mineral resource
base growth and was requested by a number of
domestic and international institutions.
Scientific results of the Institute scientists
also include the regional stratigraphic schemes,
diverse-scale geological, tectonic, litho-facial
and other maps schemes of geochemical,
hydrogeological, oil-gas geological zonation,
thermo-baric conditions of the producing
complexes and other special graphic figures
these results essentially contribute to the
confident prognosis for particular stratigraphic
complexes and efficiency of geological
exploration for oil and gas. Evaluation of
prognostic hydrocarbon resources is performed and
the maps of untapped resources are designed
providing the base for definition the most
promising directions of geological works in all
oil-gas-bearing provinces of Ukraine. For the
first time in the CIS countries, the perspectives
of DDD in term of central-basin type natural gas
and respective prognostic resources are
calculated to be additional for the natural gas
resources in the traditional traps exceeding the
latter several times. Should the new technologies
for this type of gas extraction be developed it
can provide considerable alternative source for
hydrocarbon base growth in Ukraine.
8
Oil and Gas 2/3
The new technologies are developed and current
ones are improved for the mapping of hydrocarbon
traps by geophysical studies and sedimentological
analysis of terrigenous and carbonate columns,
methodology and equipment for petrophysical
property studies of the trapping rocks with
complex structure of the porous space. In the
direction of geological column prediction the new
methodic of seismopaleogeomorphogical (SPGM)
analysis is developed and on this ground a range
of recommendations is designed concerning
prospecting methodics as well as the zoned
forecast for hydrocarbon traps in the southern
part of DDD and in sediments of
Azovo-Chornomorskiy region is conducted. It is
substantiated in theory and proved in experiments
the possibility of handling over the phase
equilibrium of gas-condensate systems for
condensate extraction increasing. Scientific
principles are defined for evaluation the output
potential of natural gas traps related to the
low-porous and low-permeable rocks. The new
technologies are developed and implemented (more
than 20) devoted to the extraction upgrade of the
oil-gas wells, cleaning and recovery the bed
trapping properties resulted in additional
production of 123 millions m3 of natural gas, 276
thousand tons of condensate and 147 thousand tons
of oil. The mobile complex laboratories are
created for the non-breaking control methods over
the tube defects and drilling equipment PKDL-III
which are applied not only in Ukraine but also in
the CIS countries, in Pakistan, Afghanistan,
Bulgaria, Poland, Vietnam, Yemen, Ethiopia, and
Cuba. Scientific works and practice
recommendations of UkrSGRI facilitated discovery
of more than 120 oil and gas deposits. Under
participation of the Institute staff in 2001-2005
only 18 oil and gas deposits are discovered and
in the State Balance about 9 billions m3 of
natural gas and about 7 million tons of oil are
recorded.

Ore and Non-Ore Mineral Resources 1/3
For the first time in the world practice the new,
previously unknown, complex ore type with native
rhenium is discovered. Geological formations of
Ukrainian Shield, Volyno-Prychornomorska and
Donetska metallogenic provinces are appraised in
term of their perspectives for PGM. The program
Platinoids of Ukraine is developed and the
priority directions for prospecting-reconnaissance
studies are defined. Perspective resources of
the gold fields are adjusted and priority
directions for prospecting works as well as
first-order targets are defined the multi-factor
geological-genetic models of gold deposits in
Ukrainian Shield are designed. In Pryazovskiy
Block of Ukrainian Shield and in Folded Donbas
some potentially economic gold placers are
encountered. Prediction is done and economic
value of perspective gold mineralization in
Bobrykivske placer field. Prognosis-metallogenic
map in the scale 1500 000 is designed and
perspectives of the rare-metal mineralization in
Ukraine are appraised. The technological
regulations for Azovske rare-metal deposit are
developed and implemented. Prognostic criteria

Laboratory Base 1/2
Laboratory of petrophysics for systematic studies
was established in 1982 in Kyivske geophysical
branch of UkrSGRI. Laboratory deals with the
complex study of petrophysical properties of
trapping rocks, particularly, non-traditional
(low-porous and low-ohm), and weathering crusts,
with assessment their role in formation of
economic hydrocarbon pools. Over 25 years the
laboratory staff had developed criteria for
petrophysic differentiation of Carboniferous
oil-gas-bearing complex in DDD methods for
definition the standard and unified petrophysical
models, petrophysic zonation, substantiation the
marginal petrophysical parameters of low-porous
trapping rocks petrophysical models for
productive low-porous trapping rocks in
Carboniferous columns. Petrophysic zonation of
trapping rocks is developed for the Northern and
Central zone of DDD. The method for determination
of capacity and filtration geophysical parameters
is improved. Essential modernization of the
laboratory base has been provided in 2005 when
the certified laboratory of precise laboratory
studies is established equipped with the
8-channel mass-spectrometer, raster electronic
microscope and raster microprobe analyzer.
